Preseason Week 4: Thoughts after rewatching the game...

I'll try to get this in before the cuts start... 1) Johnson/Tolzien: I have liked Johnson for a long time and I had previously said that I thought Tolzien had passed him....but I think Johnson may have earned his roster spot last night. Niners may actually keep 4 QBs in the hopes of trading one of them after they get down to 53. I like both guys and I would like to keep both, but one has to go. I just think Johnson has alot more potential. 2) Kaep: I've been kinda down on him all preseason but he had a great game last night. He made throws from the pocket that SHOULD have been caught and he made throws on the run that were caught. That was by far his best performance. It teased what he is capable of. I always think of something when I see him throw on the run. Trent Dilfer said right after he was drafted that he was the best player he had ever seen when he throws on the run. He ain't kidding. The accuracy is scary. My issue with him is just his throws from the pocket. Last night he was very good in the pocket. 3) Dixon/Cartwright: I would rather see Cartwright make the team, but I'm afraid Dixon just beat him out. He can do so many things (RB, FB, Special Teams). I like Cartwright because of his veteran presence. Bottom line tho, I don't think that's enough to save him. I think Doobie Dixon may be around for another year. 4) Will Tukuafu: NICE. LOL!! He was KILLING people out there as a lead blocker. With Miller and both Tukuafu and Dobbs able to play FB, why do they NEED Dixon to play FB? 5) AJ Jenkins: Nice to see him play well. Quick, Fast, big hands. Looked pretty good out there. 6) LaMichael James: Dissappointed. Had a few moves on a couple runs, but just isn't as quick or fast as I thought he would be. It's not that I don't think he's any good, it's just that my expectation level was probably inflated. I thought he's be better than Kendall, but right now it's not even close. Maybe a year in the weight room will help him. Again...I don't think he's bad, just not as exciting as I'd anticipated. I don't think he is going to be a big part of the O this year. That BTW, is OK though. Gore, Hunter, and Jacobs is PLENTY. 7) O-Line: Love it. Mauling People. I hope Leonard Davis makes the roster. I like him for depth and to line up at TE. Scary. 8) Offensive Gameplan: I can't wait for the 9th. I can't wait to see the Niners MAUL the Packer D. I will make a prediction though. Nineres will run the ball like crazy, but Randy Moss will score a TD. Book it. 9) Depth: One thing is clear...the Niners are DEEP. I can't remember the last time there were this many players I was going to be sad to lose. At WR, RB, QB, and even Safety there will be players they cut that I'd like to keep. I guess it's a good problem to have. 10) PACKER WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not too worried or disappointed with LaMichael at this point like some. The dude just had an ankle injury 2 weeks ago. And still in the learning process. Kinda like Hunter last year in the preseason. He look so much better like this time around.

Good post, as always!

4) Tukuafu looks amazing! Better than Soap. I was really sad at that pass to him that got batted down. I wanted to see if he can catch. That's one reason to keep Dixon as a back-up FB... he can catch and run, so teams have to be prepared for him to be more than a blocker.

Lost in the Kaep high of last night is Dixon having a good game for himself. Not sure what to make of it cuz he was running with the #2's on both teams.

He trucked a guy really hard last night. There were some great hits from the Niners backups last night. Ian Williams destroyed a guy late. Tukuafu was blasting fools all night. Fun game to watch and see our backups fighting for spots.

Ian Williams. I forgot to mention him. ;-)

The only thing I disagree with is keeping 4 qbs' jus to trade 1 later. This roster is talented enough already. I don't think a 4th string qb trade would get us a better player than a player that we would cut to keep him, I could be wrong doe.

I think he means that we would have to cut a player we want to keep to keep 4 QBs on the 53. Could be right. There will be a demand for whichever QB gets cut.

Ya maybe, depends on who the last cut was & what round pick we would get for a 4th string qb. Even then you don't know if that player would pan out better than that roster spot the niners wasted to keep that 4th string qb. Like I said, I could be wrong. I like the team depth for the most part. We need all the talent we can keep to make a run for the SB this year. Also I think we have extra picks for next yr(I think) already. We need to make that run this year & get that 6th ring.

I'd like to see Dixon improve as a FB so that the Niners have the kind of backfield they had with Roger Craig and Wendell Tyler or Craig and Tom Rathman. Either can run or catch so the defense can't zero in on either.

Keep the QB & trade one for better draft position. Almost guaranteed that someone will need a QB. Probably could get a 5-6th rounder or trade draft selection positions.
