Year by Year Payroll Observations

Gentlemen, I have been looking at our payroll going forward (See Spotrac.com, it's a great resource) to see how the team is going to look years into the future and I wanted to share some observations that I think you all will be interested in. 1. If Crabtree doesn't make huge improvements, he will get cut after this year and the team will take the one year cap hit in 2013. We are currently obligated to pay Manningham about 5 million in 2013 and almost 6.5 million to Crabtree in 2013 with roughly 2 million in cap hits if he gets cut. This is over 10 million allotted for two WR's neither of which is a true #1 WR at this point. We would be better off finding a true #1 and paying that guy 10 mill per year with AJ Jenkins or whomever to fill up the other WR spots. Obviously, Manningham could get cut for a 1.5 million cap hit, but his overall salary is 1.5 million less in 2013. The point is I just don't see us keeping both, and I think Baalke is setting up Crabtree to get cut. 2. Our DL needs some attention. J. Smith is signed through 2013 only and I am interested in what happens to his contract situation. He seems like the kind of guy that could play until he is 40, but the question becomes what his numbers will be and what his salary is. I see him taking a pay cut per year for sure and signing an extension for the 6 million range per year for two or three years which will keep him here through 2015 or so. Ice is the other guy that will likely be extended. He is strong as hell and at NG he could easily play for years to come. IMO Ice is one of the best DL in the NFL that never gets any credit. ICE is signed only through the end of this year! He is a great NG and may be due for a huge pay day if he leaves, which would result in a huge hole in our DL. I don't know what kind of money it will take to extend him, but I'm a little pissed that Baalke hasn't tried to extend him before now...or maybe he has and ICE is looking to get paid. The NG position is a huge issue if something ins't done here. Aldon Smith's situation is another huge worry. He is signed through 2015 currently, but he is going to demand a huge increase if he continues on his terror this year. He is a 10 mill plus guy and we are already paying a pretty huge amount to Ahmad Brooks with between 6-9 million per year. 3. Navarro Bowman, Anthony Davis and Tarrell Brown, Mike Iupati. We have some issues with this group going forward. I think the running theme here is that Baalke hasn't been extending player contracts like he really should be. All four of these players play huge roles on our team and will going forward. All are either solid starters or above average (Bowman was an all-pro last year). Right now Bowman and Brown are making virtually nothing compared to their production and are going to want to get paid for sure. I would love to keep all four, but it just isn't going to be possible unless guys like Gore and Good win get dropped and some others like J. Smith take pay cuts, so look for Baalke to trade Brown and Bowman for as much as he can get after this year as both are signed through 2013 at this point. I think Baalke will want to keep his OL in place as they get older and it appears that there is a huge commitment to the OL by those in control of the organization. I think Iupati and Davis get extended with increases in pay to roughly 5 million per. 4. Carlos Rogers better keep up his production or he is gone, because there isn't much of a cap hit if he gets cut due to a fairly small signing bonus. In fact, you could argue that Baalke is banking on his production dropping so he can cut Rogers and move his salary to Brown and save Brown's spot on the team. 5. Look for us to use a day-one draft pick on a center in the next two years if Kilgore doesn't work out. Goodwin's contract is up after 2013 and I don't think he gets signed again due to his age and he actually makes a lot for a center. 6. We pay a lot of guys between 5 mill and 10 mill. Much more than other squads. The Pats, Saints and other QB dominated teams are built way differently, and it is surprising that they often have a lot of cap room despite paying their QB 20 mill per year or so. 7. Haralson is way overpaid. 8. Gore, I love you for what you have done for the organization but your spot is open for grabs and the squad really needs his 5 million per year for other newcomers like Brown, Bowman and Aldon Smith. 9. If Alex Smith doesn't make it to over 3900 yards passing and 25 TD's this year, his roster spot is in serious jeopardy just from a financial standpoint. I'm not pro or anti Smith at all, but it is really just about the amount of money being paid for the stats and his stats so far simply don't justify a 10 million per salary and that is the bottom line. (FYI, Drew Brees is only getting paid 10.4 million for 2012!) In short, we have some very good up-and-comers that are going to need to get paid to keep and we are going to need a lot of the money that is currently allotted to older guys like Gore to keep them. We are in a changing of the guard era and we are going to see some great 49ers go away.

Agreed. He would have to have another couple years BETTER than last year to even sniff a Willis-like contract.

While I can see Justin playing for 5-6 million a year, he's worth closer to 15 than he is to 5.
