If you remember, painfully, 1983 was the year we lost to Washington in the NFCC on a bogus PI call on Ronnie Lott. After that season, we brought in some big name guys during the offseason and made some changes on the team:

E. Cooper for R. Francis at TE --Yea, not a new player, but a new position for the Vet
Stuckey moves to LDE for Pilers--Another position change for vet
Dan Bunz for Willie Harper at LOLB
Max Runager for Tom Orosz at P

Rookie Class
Michael Carter
Jim Fahnhorst
John Frank
Jeff Fuller
Derrick Harmon
Guy McIntyre

Then they went 15-1 (ref stole our perfect season) and became World Champs after a 10-6 season the previous year.

So you guys see any other off-season similarities?

It's SuperBowl or Bust this year!!!

Go Niners!

This part is true.
i was only 2 in 83

So no point in discussing the 81 Superbowl with you, either!

i trace my hatred of the redskins back to that "call". you know the year after we won the super bowl was odd. strike, we were not very good for whatever reason. was that a super bowl hangover during that strike shortened year or did we have some injuries?can not remember
ESPN has a good documentary on that 83/84 team. Freddie Solomon is especially acidic, which just goes to prove that some competitive feelings never do go away, despite the numbers of years and miles.

At any rate -- as Tico has already pointed out -- they lost to Washington in the playoffs on a totally BOGUS call. The team returned to action the following training camp totally ticked off from day one. Many players in the ESPN documentary confirm they "played mad" that entire year -- played with the proverbial chip on their shoulder. And -- man I remember some of those games! Complete and total domination. I have never seen a more complete 49er team, which is why many point to this particular squad as "best ever," even though it's before the great Jerry Rice and other stars would arrive and make their presence felt.

I highly recommend that documentary. Someone, I'm not sure who, did a really masterful and crafty job of painting a real portrait of the team during this one particular season. If you're a 49er fan, you'll learn new things. It's eye-opening.

Don't feel bad I was negative 7 in 83, only alive for Young's superbowl.
