You are assuming VD can't be converted to WR? The post indicated that having 5 WRs on the field at one time is stupid...as in always stupid. My objection is with the idea that it couldn't be used effectively by a guy as creative as Harbaugh. He might even have a set with five TEs! Just for the hell of it! How bout five QBs--Smith, Johnson and CK are all very fast for QBs so we just need two more!

Don Coryell comes to mind. Mike Martz? Not sure how many teams have flooded the field but most teams use RBs and TEs these days. Having five guys running patterns is not that rare. I was actually surprised Harbaugh did not do more of that last year when they stacked the box. Tends ot kill the blitz if you can out number the DBs with receivers...they back off pretty fast. Teams like Baltimore make it difficult because they shift as the ball is put into play...very confusing D.

Well ok I take it back, many high schools do it. There are things you just don't do in the pros. Maybe if you have Drew Brees you can get away with it but it is not a formula for winning football.

None of Coryells teams had any success in the playoffs.

The response was to 5 WR sets. Not 5 players in running routes

Harbaugh's teams have simply never used wide receivers in the way thats being discussed here. Its a philosophical choice that I tend to agree with.

I seem to remember them using WRs in the backfield.

At any rate, they killed opponents defenses...just never had a defense to equal the offense. Still, your statement was that it was "stupid" to line up five WRs at the same time and I stand by the idea that it can and has worked at times when teams have 1) solid OLines and 2) the D is trying to take away the run (stack the box). With five WRs and good timing plays you can beat that D. May have been effective against Baltimore had the 9ers 1) had five WRs and 2) had more practice in the new offense.

That, or something close is how i envision our 3rd down and RZ package to look. Not 5 WRs, but 5 receivers. Then let's see the Ravens play a box 8 against that. I just don't think they would dare do that.

Yes, and if the 9ers did not have good options at RB as receivers then five WRs could be utilized. Miller is also a favorite of mine after his steller year.

I can't wait to see what Harbaugh does with James! His highlight film is amazing!
