Former Giants tight end Mark Bavaro told the Newark Star-Ledger this week that Bahr sustained a concussion during the 1991 NFC Championship Game and was "kind of out of it" when he kicked the 49ers out of the postseason, ending their bid for a third straight Super Bowl title. Bavaro said Bahr needed a teammate to guide him onto the field before he drilled a 42-yard field goal as time expired in the Giants' 15-13 victory. "He'd tackled somebody on a kickoff return earlier in the game and he was kind of out of it," Bavaro said. "(Long snapper) Steve DeOssie had to kind of, actually, guide him on the field and line it up. But you know, that was regular stuff back then." Noting the NFL's increased emphasis on player safety, particularly in regards to concussions, Bavaro said that game in which Bahr booted five field goals would have likely played out differently today. Niners fans, of course, wish it had. "Matt was a great guy, a tough guy, and we certainly appreciated him coming out and doing that for us," Bavaro said. "But I don't think that stuff happens today."
