It was like our defense gave up "just" enough to lose the game for us, granted Offense never really helped to win it but it was like our defense choked on many occasions. hate thinking of that Favre throw still. I dont think baalke is gonna let Rodgers/Goldson walk.. We need that secondary secure and continuity.. the guys we let go in FA last year had been on the team for quite some time.. i wouldnt be suprised to see Brooks walk and us grab another pass rusher early on with a WR in the 2nd.. or even vice versa.. but theres no way we are letting all those guys walk. And if we do ill question the front office on why they are saving millions of $'s when we are knocking on the door of a superbowl

Choking on many occasions. Really! Really! Patrick Willis was out for 3 games and we went 13-3. I can agree that defense can improve in the secondary. But you say "many occasions". BULLSH*T!! That is just flat out wrong. INCORRECT! Our defense held it together when Alex "Garbage" Smith was throwing the ball in the dirt. Offense near the bottom of the league in 3rd down conv. and red zone TD. Defense at or near the top of the league in points allowed, run defense, and total defense. Justin Smith literally won us a couple games with great plays(Eagles, Giants) That's not choking. You are WAYYYY off. Goldson will get franchised and Rogers will sign a deal. WR in the first round is priority. Wouldn't be surprised if we trade up to get a higher pick.

Bro, I think you are misunderstanding him. If it wasn't apparent to you in the very first sentence (I bolded it for you), then consider that he is talking about our defense in PREVIOUS years (ie. the reference to the loss to the Favre-led Vikiings in 09). Nothing in his post seems to refer choking this past year. Breathe...slowly...

I'd say that we can all agree that last year's off-season worked about just as perfect as it could have with waiting for the frenzy of FA to die down and then focusing on the mid-level guys. But I will be the first to admit that after about 10 days of FA last year, I was getting pretty antsy. Remember, we let Spikes, Baas, Clements, Lawson and Franklin all walk without much of an attempt to retain them because of the price-tag we had envisioned for them. I was really surprised at the time. I was pretty sure Lawson and Clements were history, but I was kinda surprised how the other guys were let go. At the time, I was nervous. We all know what happened next, with Baalke having one of the best off-seasons for a GM in recent memory. I'm wondering at this point if we could see something very similar this year...

I think it is safe to assume A. Smith is gonna be back. But beyond him, could it be that the envisioned price tag is set for our guys and we see them all walk again? Rogers, Goldson, Brooks, Ginn and Snyder could all walk if the cards fall the right way (though I see no reason why we wouldn't franchise Goldson). It would not surprise me one bit if we lose all of those guys.

I think Baalke/Harbaugh might think they can do it again with a different cast of mid-level guys brought in for 1 year deals and maybe a mid level WR on a multi-year deal. It would not surprise me if this happened. What would be surprising is if this strategy works as well the second time around...

Worth noting is that last year Baalke DID actually go after some pretty big names, but got turned down. Asomugha, Jonathan Joseph, and Plax all had offers on the table from us. So it wouldn't surprise me if we end up making (somewhat) of a splash this year. Aside from resigning our own FA's, I fully expect Baalke/Harbaugh to go guns blazing after a big name WR. I expect that to be Vincent Jackson now that Bowe, Jackson, and Welker will be tagged.

Well, yeah, they made plays for guys, but the point is that Baalke/Harbaugh/team had numbers decided upon and didn't make a "splash" for the sake of grabbing a guy like Asomugha or Joseph or someone that was commanding way more money than we were willing to spend. It would be retarded to not look into the prospect of landing a guy simply because you assume that he will be too expensive. I certainly think the 9ers will be all over investigating to potential of landing Bowe, Colston, both Jackson's, Wayne, etc. I just think once their base-line salaries are determined, we will again drop out of the running and move on to the mid-level guys. I don't think we will go "guns blazing" for anyone.
Smith will come back and will work a contract that allows the Niners to retain existing players
Goldson will worst case get the franchise tag
Rodgers will test the market, however 70% chance we sign him he understands the system plays to his strengths, he believes we are a long term winning team
Brooks will get over paid by someone else and Smith will take his place.
Snyder is a mediocre lineman at best who will get over paid and replaced by another mediocre lineman
Morgan will come back to many teams will be worried about his recovery of a broken leg

Over all and as stated by another WZ with the new stadium breaking ground, players knowing we now have a good coach and GM with an owner who listened to his uncle and got out of the way this team becomes one of the "teams" players will want to play for.

would you guys be ok with a scenario like this? imo, bringing in any one of these guys or a combination would be an upgrade over what production we've had. as long as they dont end up like the braylon experiment.....i thought he would be the key guy....well we know how that turned out. im still hopeful to see a stud drafted, but the more the merrier, swain and hastings were not good 3rd 4th options once some of the guys went down. royal also has return experience, just sayin

Absolutely. Bring in as much depth as we can reasonably acquire. We need upgrades across the depth chart at WR. I'm hoping for something along these lines:

End of 2011
#1: Crabtree
#2: Williams
#3: Ginn
#4: Swain
#5: Hastings

Start of 2012
#1: Wayne
#2: Crabtree
#3: Royal
#4: 3rd/4th Round Rookie (Jeff Fuller? Ryan Broyles?)
#5: 5th/6th Round Rookie (Marvin Jones? Devon Wylie?)

thats exactly what im thinking, but i think a wr drafted higher to replace crabtree if he doesnt perform well would be nice, that way he/they would have a year to develop, instead of waiting till next year to address it. also wayne is not a long term solution so that would also press the matter.

Back in October we basically put the rest of his remaining pro-rated signing bonus into 2012, which is why the difference was there. I got information about this about a week or so ago.

As for OLBs, the only one I see that I like is Ravens Jarrett Johnson, but who knows what he will want money wise.

Interesting. Why would a team do that?

I like Johnson too, but due to his age, I'd probably rather just pay Brooks.

They did it to free up future cap space. Figure his numbers went down over 3M a yr from 2013-2016.

And I appreciate all the kind words, I try my best to bring accurate numbers.
