Predict who the niners will make the franchise player between February 20- Marth 3.

Carlos rogers isn't a shut down corner and he's 31, Last seen he was getting demolished by Victor Cruz. I'd definitely want him back but I wouldn't franchise him. Only possibility i see is Goldson. Alex Smith franchise tag price would be way too high. Synder isn't even worth a franchise tag. The only way I see Brooks being franchised is if deals for Goldson and Rogers were made. I think Goldson, Rogers, and Brooks really want to test the market.

The post states no contracts are signed before March 3rd. Which outside of Alex is safe to assume as I believe the defensive players want to test the FA market. So the question is if you could have ONE player back for 2012 season only which one would it be???

I wouldn't franchise anyone on this team. Yeah, Rogers and Goldson made the Probowl but so what. There are enough smart execs out there to see that a player suddenly becomes good, after years of underwhelming play, it's because of the system/environment. Sure they are talented. However, their talent works best in conjunction with the other players around them. I would guess that GMs out there will take a look and see two players who have shined because they play behind a monster front seven.

Rogers played terrific in the second half of that game and fully made amends in my opinion. You are right about his age though. I think Carlos wants to be here, he has made that known through media markets so I expect him to resign anyway. Brooks had a good season and was very solid but there is no way he deserves to be paid amongst the top five in his position. Goldson I think will want to test the market. He's probably still a little ticked about the lack of interest he got last season and he just put together his best season so I am like 95 % sure the niners are going to franchise him.

As strong as our defense was playing throughout the season and the fact that it got even better in the postseason, the team will try to keep as much of it together as it can. I am skeptical of Goldson as well when you consider how up and down his play was and then after an offseason where he got little to no interest on the free agent market and wasn't even in the 49ers plans until Reggie Smith got injured, you know he felt snubbed, then magically he puts together his best season on a one year contract. However thats the nature of the beast when it comes to football, when you perform even for one season, you get paid.

I'm not so sure about this at all. Brooks was an enormous contributor to the Niner defense this year. IMHO, he is just as valuable to the defense as Rogers, if not more so because the team has more depth at CB than they currently do at OLB... I say pay the man!!

I'm curious...is it top 5 of all the LB's or by position such as OLB's or, even better, SAM's in the 3-4? I would like to know what the figure of top 5 for this position, S & CB are. The key will be to lock down at least Rogers/Smith. Then you can offer contracts to both Brooks/Goldson. Then you can decide on your franchise tag.
