Good post. It really depends on who they think is going to develop on the team. Yes, it sucked to get Goldson and Rogers on 1 year deals, but that's what they wanted to deal because the market wasn't giving them what they wanted. When the lockout ended a lot of players thought there was going to be a huge demand but there wasn't. I'm just glad we got both of them. I heard somewhere that the Niners offered Goldson 25 million dollars and he turned it down.

I think it's critical to have a good secondary. It really depends on what these guys are willing to take to stay. No way the Niners get in a bidding war with other teams. I think Rogers is key to sign maybe four years 40 to 50 million and Franchise tag Goldson at 6.2.

Then we are going to be short for Colston, but I think there are a bunch of 2nd tier recievers out there.

I think we pick up the 6 6 Stanford TE Fleener in the draft and another tall fast WR, and we might not need to break the bank on WR's.

Yes, the offseason is going to be key for the Niners, can't wait until the Draft.
Both...it's been well documented they need to upgrade the receiving corps. I'm sure Harbaugh/Baalke will do that. Resigning Morgan and drafting Coby Fleener will really help. They also need to sign a good FA and draft a burner. Snyder wasn't on the FA list...I think it's important to re-sign him, whether he continues to start at RG or not. I'm thinking they'll let Rachal go...and if so, will need someone to step up and claim RG. Could be Snyder, who overall played pretty well. If not, they may need to acquire an OG, either via FA or the draft. Either Kilgore or Person could fill that role...they're also versatile OL. I'd also like to see them get a 3rd RB...Dixon has had some moments, but still dances too much vs really hitting the hole. This looks like good draft for RB's, too. I'd also advocate for an increased role for Bruce Miller next year...use him more in short ydg situations and toss him the rock a little more often.

As for the D, definitely re-sign Brooks, Grant, Rogers, Goldson. They may need to franchise the latter, for at least next season. I see Aldon Smith potentially replacing Haralson next year (his DUI aside). He'll definitely benefit from a full off-season to improve his other OLB skills. I was impressed w/NT Ta'Amu from Wash in the Senior Bowl...big like Sopoaga, but quick and a real force in the middle. Also, DE Quinton Coples was a man among boys...dude's got very impressive skills to disrupt plays in the backfield. Both guys will go pretty early in the draft, especially Coples. Like CB's, you can never have too many good pass rushers.

There really isn't a need on the defense assuming that Rogers and Goldson remain. Brooks would be nice to keep but not necessary. Still, I believe he will stay.

This team is one stud WR from the Super Bowl. Most of the 3rd down issues were about the overall inefficiency of the passing game as a whole. Injuries and the failure of Braylon Edwards were the culprits. That cannot be allowed to happen again. Load up on wide outs and let the competition begin.

u can always improve, banking on a certain level of production to carry over to the next year is highly risky, check fangios track record, as a DC his D's got a little bit worse every year in each place hes been, carolina, indy and houston, dont be naive and automatically assume our high level of play is gonna carry over on D

As I said above, the need is not nearly as great on defense as offense, assuming everyone stays.

It is also obvious that one never overlooks a chance to improve. Though it is clear the greatest need is at WR, if the draft falls in such a way that the best value on the board is a DB instead of a WR, then you take the value. Drafting for need is rarely the best value longterm.

agreed, more needs on O than D without question

If the 49ers can fill the need for a stud WR and RG, the rest of the FA/draft time will be of much lesser consequence. Having spent a lot of time watching the OL play this past season, I'm not so sure that the need to upgrade the center of the line is not on a par with WR. A lot of difficulties this season in the passing game, and running game as well though to a lesser degree, were due to the failure of the OL to maintain the front of the pocket. When faced with a strong pass rush up the middle (Baltimore, NYG come to immediate mind), the center/guard area was not able to hold up. Too many passes batted down, too much throwing off the back foot, etc.

The 49ers definately screwed up with the 1 year contracts. Rogers and Goldson both earned contracts. We have struggled at cb for so long and I think Rogers did one hell of a job. Goldson too. Goldson played well. He is a head hunter and has served notice that he is gonna hit you. We needed that.
A number one receiver would be nice and maybe, hopefully, we can get one. But I'd hate to let what worked so well fall apart for that WR. I believe an offseason and this offense working together can work wonders. We have a Superbowl competitive team on our hands. A few tweeks here and there and the desire to be champions should be enough

Really. How so? The NFL was coming out of the lockout so there wasn't a typical off season and free agency period to work with. If you look at the 1 year deals the Niners signed, they did VERY well.

Can you imagine paying another dime for Braylon Edwards after the so-called season he had? Did you know for sure that both Rogers and Goldson were going to have Pro Bowl type seasons? No one else did. The Niners made some great decisions based on the limited time they had available. Now they have more decisions to make and they have the resources to keep both of the guys who earned a longer term contract.
I cannot 'NOT' see us going after a starting RG/reserve o-linemen (just don't see us resigning Snyder).
maintain D we were never out of a game as painful as our offense was to watch

Upgrade Offense. Can't plan for turnovers in any game. Sooner or later, our Offense needs to create separation in the scoring department.

The needs are much more pronounced on offense for sure. WR is a glaring need, plus the interior of the line could use some help as well. A #3 QB, a #3 RB and our TE/H-back role also have to be considered.

I do not think our defense and special teams should be completely ignored, but at least the Niners are dealing from a position of strength in those two phases of the game.

If possible, we need to resign all of those guys. All of them had a big impact on the season.

willing to bank on that type of defensive production 2 years in a row? wow thats ballsy, we're gonna need to be much better on O just to maintain a similar record, especially with fangios background

You resign the defensive players and use the leftovers to patch the holes on offense. You still have the draft to add WR and with the crop of them in free agency it's almost impossible not to upgrade. This defense is special and they should be kept together as long as possible

I just meant on who you resign. Goldson and Rogers are a must. Then upgrade the O specifically at WR

Snyder is such an asset. I would hate to see him leave. The guy has played all 5 positions on the o-line and has done well at them all. He provides awesome depth.
