It would be a disaster to lose either coach Roman or Fangio, especially after only one season.

Roman is the best OC the 9er's have had since Mike McCarthy, and I'm basing that on McCarthy's success in GB.
Manusky was a good DC, but Fangio is better and has this defense eating nails.

You sure about that? San Diego has the 26th (25.3 ppg) ranked defense right now. In San Fransisco the defense was 16th (21.6 ppg) last year, 4th (17.6 ppg) in 2009, 23rd (23.8 ppg) in 2008 and 20th (22.8 ppg) in 2007.

Adding to that, I would like to quote myself from this thread:

Interesting thoughts about the Chargers and their struggles, especially on the defense:

This part is especially interesting, as it contains something about our former defensive coordinator, Greg Manusky (emphasis mine):

One is the defense. What has happened to this group? The secondary is a mess, the linebackers are not playmakers and the defensive line is inconsistent at best. Can we say that Greg Manusky has struggled to coordinate this group?

Last season, Ron Rivera led this group, which is mostly the same players from a season ago, to a No. 1 ranking in yards allowed, fourth in rushing yards allowed, first in passing yards allowed, second in sacks, fourth in opponents' third-down conversions and 10th in points given up.

This season? Manusky's group ranks 10th in yards allowed, 24th in rushing yards allowed, 25th in passing yards per play, 13th in sacks, 32nd in opponents' third-down conversions and 27th in points allowed.

His units struggled statistically during his four seasons in San Francisco, and now replacement Vic Fangio has taken the 49ers and turned them into a viable force in short order. Manusky had a fine playing career, but his record as a coordinator so far has been shaky at best.

Sources say that he has asked the defenders to do things they are not comfortable doing and that he has messed with some players' confidence, especially in the secondary.

Wow, I stand corrected. Without knowing the stats, I thought coach Manusky was a good DC. Good for the 9ers I'm not the GM.

Well, I kinda fell into the same camp. I also thought he was decent and it seemed that sometimes, he came up with an interesting wrinkle or gameplan that was certainly clever, so I was kinda sad to see him go, especially since Fangios previous track record as a defensive coordinator was a mixed bag, at least stat-wise.

Now, it seems our defense has elevated their game under Fangio to the NFL mountaintop (they are first in points per game and somewhere around the top in turnovers generated, if I remember correctly and those two are the important ones to me), so they clearly play outstanding under him while Manuskys new unit struggles.

Surely some things like Philipp Rivers being a turnover machine this year have influenced the defense in San Diego as well, but it seems we did well with our coaching decisions in deciding whom to keep and whom to let go, as the position coaches we retained have been doing good work (RBs and O-Line much improved after a slow start, D-Line outstanding from the very first snap).

It's amazing how this team plays defense under fangio compared to manusky, and we have the same guys, plus some new ones after losing Spikes, Franklin, Lawson and Clements. Our secondary has improved, our pass rush is finally there, and Our tackling is spot on. Well rounded Defense.
The key is that a new OC would not be installing a new offense - the would still run the JH offense. And if we keep the same OL, RB, and WR coaches it stays even more consistent. That is part of the reason offensive HC can keep more stability over their teams -- they hire OCs that will run their system.

Defenses are a little easier to install, as long as you aren't installing a new system that requires a complete personnell overhaul. It is a little easier to find a DC that runs a version of the defense that is currently installed.
