He did drop in coverage a few times in college. Had an INT return for a TD as well. Should have caught it. But, he had such an excellent game otherwise. Our LBs group is 2nd best in the league.

this is a great draft class even if Kaep doesn't pan out---and I think he will pan out and be a good one.

I like the way that Harbaugh is working all of the rookies into the game. He tries to give everyone a role and our draft class has stepped up big time. Bill Walsh thought if you
I have watched the Detroit about three times and Aldon Smith is really coming on. He looked great in the game. I'm giving him a nickname.......THE PRAYING MANTIS.....the guy has the longest arms over 7'2 wing span I believe, he's 6 4 and he's got a good burst of speed, but he's strong and just manhandles people. You know Fred Dean was about 6 2 230 but he was really fast but you don't hear about how strong he is......Fred Dean competed in some arm wrestling competitions and was a natural beast. Aldon Smith is naturally strong. The lineman on the team have said that they underestimate how strong he is. Maybe it's the leverage that he plays with, but what a great pick in the draft. He went under the radar for me but the more I read about him after the draft that I'm glad that he got hurt his last year, because he might have gone a lot higher in the draft. The cornerpiece of the draft.....Pass Rush is exactly what we needed.
I was a little bit worried in preseason but Kaep looked a lot better in the Tampa game. He sure is accurate. His passes were on the money. He seemed way more confident in the game than he did in preaseason and with another year under his belt, I'm sure he will push Alex. And if something happened to Alex, I think he could step in and get better every week. Think about this, he's 6 5 235 pounds and he's faster than Cam Newton or Steve Young, that's really scary.
Hunter is a great compliment to Gore. I actually think he should be featured more. Let the guy get into space with some passes and see what he can do. I like it because he can go up the middle, or bust it outside. He really uses his blocks well. I've noticed in the game that he's running behind his blocks patiently waiting to make his move and when he makes his move, he has enough burst to break some big runs. He runs hard, and hits harder than his size, because he's built so low to the ground and his best asset is his balance. Hunter has fantastic balance, he doesn't go down easily. Great weapon for Harbaugh to use.
Culliver is beating out Spencer for the nickel back.......really like the way he's playing. He looks fluid and he didn't back down against Megatron. I know a lot of the people on the board were skeptical about this pick. I was one of the. I was unsure because I didn't read too much about him, but I knew he had the size and speed and he's versatile, he played WR, KR, and Safety before he was moved to corner and only played seven games there, but if you have good coaching and this year we see what good coaching can do........here's a guy with great size and speed and all of the raw talent you need. Let's see if he get more picks.
Kilgore and Person are unknowns, but they both were very versatile, smart and are great guys to develop. I liked what I saw of them and they both made the team so they got the talent. Give them a full year into the system with weight training and see what they can do. (I still think they may take a lineman in the first couple rounds in next years draft.)
R. Johnson - didn't make the team, our WR coaches pick (who coached him at USC).....didn't look that good.
Bruce Miller was a great pick. Baalke got a lot of crap on the board for this pick. How is a Defensive end who was defensive MVP in division 2 (I think) going to make the transition to Fullback. Well he's already got better hands, speed and quickness than Morris. The starter is a 7th round pick. GENIUS PICK. And he has the blue collar lunchpail mentality out there, he's got a lot of Rathman in him.
One more thing on converting players........Bill Walsh used to take a chance on players that were Athletes. Bill Walsh had a discus thrower try out with the team. The guy had the right size 6 5 275, so he has had run a 40 yard dash......he ran a 4.7 which for big man was huge. That player was Jeff Stover. Another guy we picked up who was a shot putter who was going to the olympics so he was going to miss part of the season......that was Michael Carter with a 5th round pick.
It's good to take chances on players that are versatile.......because you might have to play different positions in the nfl.
And some undrafted bonus rookies.........
Ian Williams who was undrafted. He looked good as a nose tackle and is good enough not to go to the practice squad or he would be snatched up.
Scott Tolzien who was snatched away from San Diego. He looked great against us in preseason, I think he's a nice pick up. Bill Walsh said you draft a quarterback every year which is not a bad draft philosophy on the most important player on the field, maybe in sports. You always need to be developing guys like Cassel with the Pats (7th), Brady (7th), Tolzien and Romo (undrafted). Now we have two players that can be developed behind Smith and he fits our system well.

Good post. These guys are playing way above any expectations that the draft gurus and Zone experts ever thought of. I, personally, never considered them contribution so much so soon. I thought it would take 2 years. Imagine what the team will be like after 3 drafts.

I love how costanzo is always hyped on the sidelines, always hyped after a specialteams play, and always giving the offense a congrats or a reassuring handshake or pat on the back.

Exactly, I was glad we got him. Seely had him in Cleveland.
