Our coaching is better, no doubt. But honestly, I think outside of the three or four "elite" teams in this league...we have just as much talent across the board...right now.
Right now we have a top 5 defense, the NFL's best front seven and an offense that has two or three playmakers that would start for anybody. Plus, we don't turn the ball over. We lead the NFL in +/-
Coaching is a huge part, absolutely. But I can't name more than five teams that have better TALENT across the entire roster.

mediocre talent? look around the league, there's only about 5 teams that have more talent than us. Our players haven't had good coaching since they've been in the NFL. give this coaching staff some time.

We have a lot of talent on this team. We are not a Mediocre team.

I think we're a 7 or 8 win talent team, and Harbaugh makes us a 9 or 10 win team this year.
The biggest change, apparently, is QB coaching. Smith is having a stellar year DESPITE a poor offensive line and WRs that don't get separation very well (a lot of drops too). I'm predicting 3500 yards passing, 18 TDs, and 8 INTs.
the 08 dolphins got lucky the jets let go pennington who was a solid qb and lucked into having the easiest schedule that yr.

we still have some big holes and need some guys to meet their potential, but this is a very talented team. that's why last year was such a disappointment.

It's still early, but if the Bengals are as good as their victory against Buffalo might indiciate.. we just beat two good teams on the road. I'm elated we're 3-1. At this point, I'm at the "I like this, this is good so far" stage.
If we win next week and go 4-1, I'll start saying, "Okay. Okay now, we might have something here."

Agree with the coaching assessment, but not the talent. Yes our OL had been playing horrid, but it is very unlikely that we drafted all our high OL picks poorly. I will agree the OL hasn't been coached one lick in 8 yrs nor has the qb. A good coach, a great coach, can change a 2-14 team to a 6-10 team to a SB win. JH is not coach walsh, but he has some very attractive qualities, some of which we saw today. He knew that blitzing some of our front 7 just wasn't fast enough and went with a Carlos rogers blitz, which nailed vic. Then bowman got in on the action. All those changes were made at halftime. when was the last time any useful changes were made at halftime... 10 yrs? Whatever, it is so long ago i don't remember. I guess the only caution is that SEA stinks, Cincy is not that hot(new QB and all, plus we know carson palmer refused to play there). Dallas we played even, then gave the game to them by playing not to lose...which we did. And that one was on Coach. As a team, as players, we are going to get a LOT better and this yr, under harbaugh. I firmly have believed all along 95% of our problems were lack of a professional HC. Well we got him now and he is making some very formerly mediocre players look pretty dam good.

this road trip was the best thing that could happen to this team. 3 wins before the bye is money, and we did it in a way that should really inspire confidence in this team. Cinci is better than I thought they'd be this year. Their D is pretty solid and their young offense is surprisingly good.
getting two come from behind road victories makes me feel really good about this team, no matter what happens in the immediate future.

Its just nice to see that at half time when things aren't going well, instead of yelling and trying to "motivate" professionals. The coaches calmly assess the situation like all accounts say happened in this game. And go about their business and making adjustments. What happens in the second half? We improve, use new routes, change tactics on defense. Sure we had some breaks go our way, but we were a better team in the second half then the first. Thats what what good cerebral coaching does.

well-coached and average team that has a few all-pros that make them a little above average seems about right

I agree with PascoDoc, we finally have a head coach that can bring the talent out of our players.
Without training camp, our O-line will be the last unit to develop. By the second half of the season, they should be rounding into form.
Lastly, the coaching staff is learning more each week about what our players are capable of. This game, we called many more pass plays than in the first game.
An open offense, that spreads the defense is the best way to get the ground game going.
While I agree, that we won't win the Superbowl this year, if we stay healthy, we are going to the playoffs!

Pete Rozelle once said the best thing for the NFL was to have every team 8-8. PS the 49er D is not medicore.

halftime adjustments and changing the to ratio have been huge this year. i think harbaugh even coached himself up after the dallas game. i like that each week he adds a little more to the overall game plan. imo we're not stagnant but changing a little each week and in the last two games changing each half.

This. For the last two or three years imo we have easily been the most talented team in our division, which isn't hard however. As of now, we are one of the more talented teams in the league when it comes to playmakers on offense and the front 7 on D. The front 7 has played at an elite level. The thing that is holding us back is the offensive line. They suck. The o-line has got to have some talent based on all the high draft picks, but just hasn't lived up to it yet, due in large part to coaching I believe. Our pass defense has sucked, but I believe they should get better because there is some talent there. I would say the pass defense SHOULD be average with Whitner, Goldson, Rogers, and Spencer. Right now they are bad, maybe because of the lockout and they don't have chemistry? If the line and secondary would just play to their potential or play averagely, then I think this is a GOOD team. With Singeltary last year we had 6 wins. If we had an adequate coach last year, we could have had 8-9 wins. With a great coach last year we could have had 9-12 wins. And we are a more talented team than we were last year...
