Prior to the year in my "non expert eyes"
He was a bad QB
After week 4 he was average
Now he's good hopefully he keeps growing

He is still a middle of the pack QB that had a good game, but overall season numbers are still subpar.

How about the stat of consistency. Every QB besides Rodgers or Brady has been subpar in this category. Alex Smith has been ahead of most in consistency.

Probably true. Statistically his numbers aren't great, except in one category. 8-1.

defense and special teams have a large say in that.

Winning a ring doesn't mean a QB was great nor does not winning a ring means he wasn't.

The way you can tell if the QB was great or elite is if you take him away will the team collapse like in the case of Peyton and the Colts. Or if they would still succeed like they did-example Montana and 4 SBs.

With that being your criteria, what do you think our record would be right now without Smith? I would bet my 401k that we wouldn't be 8-1, especially with Gore only really playing well in half our games.

We would not be as good. These guys are kidding themselves if they think Alex is not a big part of this. He is playing really solid football and is easily playing like a top 10 QB THIS YEAR. People are caught up in past perception. He is ranked even a little higher than that. He's dramatically improved and part of our rise. Not just a passive particpant.

The 49ers are winning in large part due to their turnover ratio. They lead the league in takeaway/giveaway ratio and Alex Smith's a major contributor to that success. Other than Rodgers ridiculous 28:3 ratio, Alex has the best percentage of TDs to INTs of any QB in the league. Even with the "Ginn handoff" this last game, Smith has the lowest number of giveaways of ANY STARTING QB. By any standard, Smith is a main reason this team is 8-1.

I agree.
He has been making the throws the past 3 weeks that I have been very critical of him not being able to make

Even if he is a middle of the pack QB, when the season started, he was ranked in the bottom 2 or 3 worst starters in the league. So i'll take middle of the pack. As for his numbers, what's par and who cares? Even in an interview with Kevin Lynch, Alex said he didn't care about stats. Bottom line, he's taking care of the ball and the team is 8-1. If he had 3,000+ yards and 20+ TDs and the team was 1-8 would that make you happier? I think it would because some of you would have just that much more fuel to add to your fire. When the team is losing it's on Alex, but when the team is winning Alex gets little credit. Which is really lame.

Yes he has been consistently average. The biggest thing for him is not turning the ball over and I think JH really limits him so he doesn't do that. I also think sometimes he is too careful with the ball and probably leaves some big plays on the field.

Subpar? So, just so I am clear, subpar means yards and TDs?

You are too caught up in fantasy football. We are 8 - 1 and that's not subpar.
