Preseason Power Rankings Week 1

In before the smug "how can there be rankings when we havent even played a snap yet" type comments.

We are ranked that low because we have a rookie head coach, installing a complex system in limited time, who must try to win with his young sub par offensive line and his veteran sub par quarterback.

Could we exceed expectations? Absolutely. But as an expectation, it has to be at least in the ballpark.

because there are worse teams ahead of us. I'm not saying we should be in the 10-20 range, maybe 21-23.

Everyone has the same gripe. Why are we placed so low in these rankings? Why does this writer have us finishing 4th in the division? The answers are also the same: New coaching staff, extremely short preparation time, the offensive line has looked poor, Alex Smith is Alex Smith, blah blah. Most people are overlooking the fact that sports writers are people and people have egos. People don't like to be wrong. Even worse than being wrong is being wrong over and over about the same thing (fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me). Just about every single writer last year picked the 49ers to win the division. Although we remained mathematically in the running late into the season, we pretty much sucked the whole time. So now all the writers who picked us to be good and win last year, and especially the ones who picked us to be good and win both of the last two years, have had enough. Even though our roster and coaching staff appears to be talented compared to the rest of the division, even if these article writers and list creators want to say we have a chance, those egos are saying, "Ooooh no you don't. We're not being wrong again. 3rd in the division. At best." They are compensating. Perhaps overcompensating.

Not many teams are worse than this one. We get a new HC, OC, DC almost every year. And we keep Alex for 7 in a row... And the O Line never improves. I can't think of real many worse than us.
