That's not exactly uber confidence in Alex Smith...thinking that there's a possibility he could lose a job to a rookie from a pistol offense.

Alex Smith must prove what we have seen in the past 7 years is not what we will see this year, not the other way around. Koz has every right to think this since every year, the key questionmark has been the QB.
If I thought "Koz" had any knowledge or understanding of the Niners, or of NFL football for that matter, I might be inclined to agree. But having listened to "Koz" as a radio guy for the Sacramento Kings, and a "sports talk" guy on Sacramento's KFBK for a number of years, one thing stands out: "Koz" really doesn't know much about sports.

His "sports talk" show was impossible to listen to because he NEVER talked sports--always turned the conversation to his own interests: movies he'd seen, his favorite food, gossip, etc. I've never heard him utter anything that showed the slightest in-depth knowledge of the Kings or NBA basketball, for example, although he might be able to tell you about a player who preferred chicken over steak, or some other nonessential bull.

So now he's an expert on the Niners, and on QB play, and knows ANYTHING about Alex Smith's history with the Niners? Extremely doubtful.

He's just mouthing what he's heard others say. Or maybe he reads Ninertalk--although that's highly doubtful, cause it would show something more than just a passing interest in the Niners. He's not as dumb as Dennis O'Donnell (who cannot even get the players straight on the field), but he's never played any sport at any level--I'm guessing (he's maybe 5'4")--and doesn't get "into" any sport enough to really know it well.

Listen to the questions he asks--all superficial and none based on an understanding of the game. He couldn't tell you the difference between the digit system and the WCO, and may not know that either of them even exists.

He knows the positions, but I doubt he knows what, exactly they do. "Post route vs Screen?" "Draw vs. Counter?" Foreign language to him. Likewise for the difference between a 3-4 defense and a 4-3. "Tampa Two or man to man?" Simply too "in depth" for him to learn, and not what he thinks he needs to know to be a talking head on a sports show.

He's not a bad guy, but he's also not a former coach, or a former player, or even a former journalist who's covered a team over many years and actually learned anything about it. He can cover the Warriors, Kings, Monarchs, Sharks, Raiders and Niners equally--which means he knows little about any of them, but can talk alot of statistics and generally BS his way through a game or an interview.

Your belief that he has "seven years of film" on Alex Smith assumes that he'd spend any time actually watching that film, or that he'd understand what he's watching, or that he's even watched the Niners on TV over the past seven years. Not likely.

you're a kings fan too? awesome

Like I said, we have 7 years of more eff-ups by Alex Smith than success. Alex must prove it and no one loses credibility in saying he hasn't proven jack and is the weak link right now.

I'm not trying to defend Alex Smith and his record. It stands for itself.

But "Koz" is not an expert on QB play by any means, and his condemnation of Alex Smith's play is mindless. Or "stupid" if you prefer.

Its kinda like saying that Alex Smith has had seven (7) years of failure, when in fact he didn't even play for two (2) years due to injuries.

That's just simple math. You should know better, Joe.

Koz is similar to a morning show talk guy. But he is local and I'm sure has seen the 49ers play enough and it doesn't take a genius to see what Alex Smith has NOT provided. One doesn't need to be an expert on the QB position to know this. Hell, many "QB Experts" suck at times also. However, there's enough evidence on Alex Smith for it to be reasonable to compare his play to that of a rookie QB. We need to look outside in on this and that is how Alex Smith has looked. We will see if he can change that this year.

Being realistic =/ Hate

this. my favorite sports writers for this team are Kawakami, Lynch, Killion, and Cohn, because they are not trying to please fans and tell them what they want to hear. They tell it like it is, which is why most fans don't like them.

Actually, I disagree--it probably will take a genius, or a QB expert, at the least, to see "what Alex Smith has not provided"--and correct it, if possible. That genius/expert is Harbaugh, and if he can't do it, nobody can.

In the meantime, I'm not gonna rely on, or pay much attention to Kozimor, especially when he's "talking football."

I just wish there were more talented and better prepared media guys. Kozimor is the on air version of that Bob Padeky guy who was trying to write for the Press Democrat for awhile--just going through the motions. He can't dazzle with brilliance, so he tries to baffle with bulls**t.

Yes but Koz isn't the only guy who is questioning Alex Smith. There's been a lot of credibile people doing the same. That's why you can't blame him for thinking this. Alex has to prove it first because, so far, he hasn't.

I wonder if that guy has an account here, his MO sounds really familiar to a certain businessman we all know and love.

So you don't "blame" people for mindlessly following the crowd?

Sorry, Joe, but I'd like to see someone put some actual thought into his work, even if that "work" is just talking on the radio or on TV.

I don't think that's too much to ask.

I've been around Koz when he was working radio in Sacramento. He was a cool guy off the air. That said All he basically did was have the sports section out on a table and kind of look at that and talk about things from the paper. Then he would just talk random stuff. This was when he was employed by the Kings and KHTK. Heard some funny stories from this guy though. He has some funny dirt on some WNBA b***hes. lol

It should be expected from a professional.

Lol. Sounds about right. He comes across as a nice guy, breezy, fun, good sense of humor, etc.

But not impressed with his work or his preparation.
Alex Smith, and the 49ers have not been a successful football team for the last 8 years or more. So technically Kozimor is correct. But Harbaugh thinks that he can extract a year of servicable football out of Smith while preparing Kap/Tolzien/? to take over the team. If he can turn Smith around and get him to play the football that he potentially could play then so much the better. So I can tolerate announcers bad mouthing the team becauese they have not been successful up to now. But at least give us a game or 6 to show what this years team has to offer, then bad mouth with some up to date information. Lets see what Harbaugh can get out of Smith and the Niners. So Koz has a right to his opinion, and I have a right to mine. I disagree with Koz and until I have more data I will take his opinion with less than a grain of salt.

I agree. If I wanted mindless opinions, I'd just read Ninertalk everyday.

Is it wrong to expect something more than that from the media, from the "professional" sportswriters, and newscasters? Maybe a little research to back up said opinion? A little gamefilm to support said opinion? Some actual thought put in before opening one's mouth?

Something more than paper airplanes, bad jokes, and lots of "personality."

He watches the games and talks to NFL players or ex players. Not sure what more you need unless you want a radio guy to start looking at game film.
