If Norv never leaves we would have been a better team and have some playoff appearances and wins, but would never get to the NFC championship game. Why? look at how they are doing in SD, he has/had talent, but under performed.

Plus Nolan would still be here along with whats his name as GM.

2 of the most over-rated coaches ever mentioned in this thread.

Norv Turner - has a top 5 QB in Philip Rivers with a top 5 defense and misses the playoffs. The guy will never win a Superbowl. Is there another coach who has had more playoff duds with such good teams? I can't think of any.

Mike Martz - inherited a very talented Rams team that was built by Dick Vermeil. Hasn't done jack squat since. There's a reason he has bounced around the league. So glad he's not in SF anymore.

Seriously, I'm 50/50 on the Alex Smith argument-train, but even haters cannot deny that since Harbaugh landed here, Alex Smith's mechanics have dramatically improved (game-by-game). Smith's footwork/focus on hanging/stepping up into the pocket and darting the ball into the 'bread-basket' of his targeted receiver (in that Chargers game) was something I had never seen out of Alex in my entire lifetime (beyond the Alex Smith who constantly over/under-throws).

Agreed! It's already starting to show, there's no denying that playing for a coach with so much support and knowledge of the position will only improve Alex's skills.

Alex finally has the NFL father he's never had.

I guess the better question would then be: what if Alex had this type of coaching since DAY 1?

Oh well..better late than never I guess.

that's the horribly frustrating thing about this hypothetical. If Norv had stayed, maybe Alex continues to improve, all those mechanics get worked out, he gets comfortable, effective, and, most importantly, maybe he never gets hurt, maybe instead of that two year black hole where he didn't play we would have been able to make a definitive statement about his future, and either be watching Smith in his prime right now or we would have already scrapped him and started over.

I like our coaching staff now, and obviously Norv staying changes everything, possibly for the better, maybe for the worse (who knows?) but I think its safe to say that if he had stayed we wouldn't still be debating Alex Smith. He'd either be our undisputed QB or he'd be gone.
