Alex Smith was smarter.

I did not watch every single second of the game, but I did watch most of it. Here are three observations:

1. I did not see the Niners called for one penalty.
2. I did not see one delay-of-game penalty *nor* do I recall witnessing any cases where the offense appeared disoriented, in a hurry, etc.
3. I don't recall seeing any dropped passes.

If the 49ers can just eliminate games lost due to self-inflicted wounds, I believe this team can surprise people.

The collective football IQ has definitely improved, rather significantly.

I concur.
I don't think it is IQ. I think it is preparation. Raye didn't have a complicated offense and didn't adjust because he was lazy. We have a coach who is sacraficing his "off-time" to put this team in the best position to succeed. Singletary also did not spend his "off-time" to help this team succeed.
Our backups and guys that wont even make the team, so does that mean that??...
Smith zip a pass past an outreach defender, hit Ginn in the hands for a drop.
Penalties are more of a discipline and focus issue rather than IQ. I wouldn't attribute dropped passes to Coaching or Player IQ either. Focus and discipline.
yeah, the penalties, and just lack of professionalism and preparation the last few yrs was MADDENING! excited to see cleaner games this yr...hopefully.
