Without a true NT & Aldon Smith not being able to cover we will play a lot of 4-3

Aldon should be sent to hit the QB every snap in a 34 or 43. Having him out in coverage is a waste of time.
Bring back the big nickel

Forcing the 3-4? We've been drafting personnel and signing FA for the 3-4 since Mike Nolan was here I'm not so sure this is a force. And you can have situational pass-rushers in a 3-4 defense.

FYI, I thought the D over the past few years has been pretty good. The problem is they're on the field too long because the offense has been completely inept and just piss-poor on 3rd down conversions. Get the D off the field and create some semblance of a pass-rush, and this 3-4 D is just fine. I'm not so sure it's an issue of philosophy vs having one squad play double number of snaps opposed to the other.

You over load his side with recievers while he is at OLB and he must come out in coverage or you will weaken your whole defense! He is basically the only pass rusher off the edge, the other guys have proven they can't get it done consistently so everyone else can be blocked one on one.

this
I hope so. I'm still waiting for the 9ers to be successful in the 3-4. Hasn't happened yet.
aldon is a much better athlete then parys and parys has been starting the last few years and he cant cover or rush the passer. whats the issue here again?

The reason for that is because of our LB corps. Never got enough good pass rushers at OLB. Aldon will be fine as 3-4 OLB or 4-3 End. It's just that he will have to work on his cover skills a bit more. Teams will line up in formations to put him into coverage.

No he doesn't have to come out in coverage. Unless the other side has more than two WR and a TE on that one side the DB and safteys and others will shift and move accordingly along with the LB. Just rush the QB and watch for the run. Charles Haley played the elephant which is what Smith will be essentially. He will not drop back except every so often to keep the other side guessing. His real sole mission is really to bring heat in the backfield to either the QB or RB.
I sure miss Manny Lawson.
I would imagine that the Niners will switch Haralson and Smith quite a bit until they feel comfortable with Smith as an every down player (in coverage). Why would you change the entire defense just because Aldon is working on being better in coverage.

Also, not all 3-4 defenses are the same. Franklin and Soap are obviously different players and their gap assignments will be different as well. It's still the 3-4, but a different way of running it.

I will say this though, RJF is NOT a NT and I think he would be better suited as a DT in the 4-3. In fact, I think he can be a solid player as a 4-3 DT. As a 3-4 DE, I think he is decent and I think he is simply undersized as a NT. In other words, if they had 4 down lineman, I could see RJF doing quite well in that role.

i was going to bring up the elephant but thats going old school. not to mention the other guy hasnt even had a chance(brooks).
why do people say soap is not a 2-4 NT because of the one year?

he gained 30 pounds since then and he is definitally stroner than franklin and is quick and faster too

more reps he gets the better he will get but he has alreadt proven as a DE he is pretty quick and is a great tackler
The defense isn't the problem....it's the offense....
have the niners even practiced or played in the 4-3 this year? Yeah this makes sense then
