Anybody worried that Alex will rely TOO much on check downs to Gore?

You mean the one that GB was so confident in that they felt the need to draft a QB in the second and seventh rounds in 2008?

Yeah, everybody knew he was gonna be just fine. Just like Alex Smith this offseason!

Lulz.

JTO won the job because he was the better QB in the preseason and training camp. Whether or not he knew the system is totally beside the point. JTO had a very good preseason and EARNED the right to start that season. Smith played like s**t that preseason (prior to his 'injury').
That is just plain silly man, you should know better than to even go there.

Giving that same situation, if Aaron Rodgers was on the team, system or not, Martz would have started Rodgers. If Smith was any good he would have beaten out a horrible QB in JTO, stop making excuses.

More speculation and conjecture, do you ever post anything but?

Now I'm getting confused! Posters are calling Smith a Pre Season wonder...saying he plays great in the preseason but not during the games that count. So, now you say that he played poorly that preseason. Can you guys get your arguments straight!

JTO "earned" the job by already knowing the offense, Smith and Hill did not. Smith had already hurt his shoulder by that time and players from other teams noticed but not his coaches.

Martz system is unique and it was silly to hire a guy who runs an offense so eccentric. Why? When he walks you can't continue to run that offense you have to start from scratch...leading to Raye.

Lastly, the swing passes for check downs were so obvious that Smith had to get the ball out very quickly (no time for touch) or have the ball intercepted. Every one in the stadium saw them coming and that falls on the coaches and play calling.

The Saints have turned checkdowns and screens into an art form. Atlanta does it well also.
It seems like some people are forgetting that Craig was a 1000 yard runner and receiver and he didn't get those receiving yards catching the ball 20 yards downfield.

Translation: Montana "checked down" the ball a lot and the WCO offense features a lot of short passes that gain YAC.

Montana was KING, but let's also remember (if only watching the highlights of old) that Joe often had LOTS of time to stand tall in the pocket. Our pass protecting OLs were far less kind to all of the QBs that have tried to follow in his footsteps.
It's funny hearing all the excuses for Smith, 7th coordinator in 7 years, no weapons, no OL, blah blah blah.

Yet under those SAME circumstances, Shaun Hill beats out Alex TWICE in open QB competitions, has a better 49ers career record, and puts up better numbers.

19-31 lol

its a well known fact that the playbook was scaled down for hill because he couldnt make all the throws. when alex was in the game the playbook got bigger and harder.

Do you realized, you are promoting a qb that couldn't throw 20yard without heaving the ball giving DBs that critical half second to recover, in a thread that critizied too much checkdowns

Cause everyone knows what geniuses we had for coaches since they fired Mooch, who I thought was a pretty damn good coach all in all.
If he's checking down to Frank "Im a Muthafu**en Beast" Gore, then no Im not worried.......

You forgot the biggest excuse of all...his broken shoulder! Wimp!
Checkdowns and slants are big part of the WCO. We all know Alex is a master of the checkdown. Maybe thats something Colin is going to have to learn. He has a rocket for a arm. Checkdowns might be hard for him. If so Alex should be able to teach that skill.
