We played the same game with Nate Davis. Rookies are not ready to start in the NFL, especially second rounders. Smith is the starter, period. There is no competition in 2011.
Hell, CK couldn't even get the snap at the beginning of practice yesterday. He's going to be facing the best defenses in the league in one month. Come on!

Especially when we play the eagles.

As much as I hope Kap is the real deal, history can be sobering. I again looked at the drafts over the last ten years. There were no "good" QBs drafted in the second round except for Brees. But he was drafted 32nd, and was the second QB taken that year. Kap was the 6th QB taken this year. If he turns out to to be a franchise QB it will almost be unprecedented. Not impossible - look at Brady - but almost. So I am going to hold my breath.

You don't get it. Since CK plays for the Niners, he will be great. That is how it works. 6th QB selected, 16th selected, 26th selected, it doesn't matter. The jersey has magical powers.

Ah! You mean he is not the anointed one?
Quite right. Let's give him time but not assume he is the second coming of Joe.

Awesome if Kap impresses enough to start. Sucks for Alex, but he got his 5 mil, and the team comes first.

Amen.
I'll give you a reason why CK won't start. Straight from "The Hurry-Up, No-Huddle: An Offensive Philosophy" by Gus Malzahn (Auburn's OC).
According to Malzahn, the coordinator (himself in this case) “should give your quarterback ONE defensive player to read and only TWO receiver options based on that defensive player’s actions. [...] Based on four years of statistics, we know this (the reading of ONE defensive player) has helped our touchdown-to-interception ratio since using this simplistic approach.”
CK came from a very similar offense. The biggest difference being his position behind center. Coming from a system which requires the QB to make ONE read means CK has a lot of learning to do.

Dammit!! I knew we should have traded into the first round to draft him. Now he will never be good.

Few things here. First off, teams, including us were trying to get to CK in the end of round one via trade. Kap easily could have been a first rounder which would cancel out the second round QB logic. If more teams needed a QB he could have been top 15.
Second, not every team has a hands on, successful ex nfl qb as a coach and mentor. Great QBs, HOF QBs have been drafted in the 3rd, 4th, 6th rounds, etc. and a few have gone undrafted. I wouldnt buy into the "2nd rd QB curse" stuff. Its completely subjective.
In our case, we have CK, a bright kid with phenomenal physical tools, the desire to be great, work ethic, and a widely renowned QB/offensive mastermind teaching him the game. I like our chances.

matt ryan
flacco
Bradford
Stafford
it can happen, deal with it. I am not saying CK is as good as those guys, but showing that rookies can start. Will he start, probably not. We have a coach that knows how to work with qbs though

I think Colin will be our starter next season. But my patience is thin right now. I want immediate results. As much as this pains me to say, Alex gives us our best chance to win. He can atleast keep us in games and then lose at the end. Keep the season interesting. We'd be throwing in the towel right away if we start Kaepernick. And don't give me the Rothelisberger/Sanchez got it done their rookie season arguement. That sh*t is rare

Wait wait wait.......isnt the reason why we brought back sorry a$$ Alex Smith to a one year contract to mentor our rookie.....throwing him in there would defeat the purpose on keeping that loser on the team......

No, i'm pretty sure we brought him back to be the starter. Unless he lays a giant turd during training camp, he will be starting week one.
