I know you're kidding but in effect that's what happened. And probably still would if Carr weren't getting cut.

Aww David and his board shorts and dodgers cap will no longer be gracing the practice field? This was cut was inevitable but official word is still satisfying.
I was there for the "We want Carr!" chant and it was the ultimate SMH moment. Never again.

With this, they'll be @ $22-23M under the cap...with which they can sign other FA's. It also signals they intend to sign a vet QB...be it Orton, Kolb, whomever. If they sign Asomugha, they'll cut Clements (freeing up @$15M in cap space) and still be able to sign more players.

I'll be extremely surprised if the Niners give up the high draft picks that would be required for Orton, Kolb, whomever.

And think about it this way, even though it's not a perfect comparison. Harbaugh's spent the past few years at the college level, where your players are recruited from HS and in a few cases transfer from JC or rarely from another Div1 school. If you had the choice to recruit the players you wanted, or could get a proven player for 1 or 2 years at the cost of half your scholarships or other penalties, which do you think you as the head coach would choose?
