I am no Alex Smith fan, but the tools are there, and if he can put it together, the kid can be a solid starter for a long, long time.

I just think you have prematurely taken Smith to the dumpster. If the team had no future plans with Smith, I think they would let him go, and find another vet who acknowledges he is on a one or two year leash.

Only reason he is coming back is because of the lockout, had this been a normal off season both sides would have parted ways. This is more a marriage of convenience than anything else.

I understand how the Harbaugh dynamic could very well change EVERYTHING here....But they are only offering him a one year deal for two reasons:

1. The lockout. I'd rather have a guy like Alex who has been here and knows these players, then some last minute veteran FA.

2. One year deal because, HE HASN'T EARNED ANYTHING LONGER.

If Alex does well, I'll sure as hell be excited. But that's another "if."

Kaepernick was selected for a reason. To be the QB of the future. It's up to Harbaugh and ultimately Alex to see just how immediate that future is.

Sorry if this thread appears to be another Alex Smith hijacked thread, but he did finish the year pretty well. 11 TD's to 1 INT in the final 6 games, and a passer rating that was: 87.4, 87.4, 130.9, 66 against the SD #1 ranked pass defense, 91.0, 107.8.

Let's be real, Smith has a long ways to go, but he finished the year very well, is 27 years old, has tough skin (why would anyone even dare to come back to this city and its wrath against him), has a ton of physical ability, is bright, and works hard. Smith has a lot going for him.

I don't think he is that far away as many believe, and I believe he will be successful in this league whether it is this year, in three years, or in five years. At some point, he is going to put it all together. It may be best for him to move on, but I think people dismiss his chances way too easily.

This year is a trial run. If Smith can't perform, he's done. If he can play at a high level, then he will get another extension. And, being only 27, he can still be the QB of the future. This has not been decided either way.

You have given up hope on him, in understandable frustration, but I think your frustration has already pushed Alex out the door in the future. That is, in my opinion, premature, since as you state, Harbaugh may be able to improve Smith's performance.

And, let's say that Alex is able to be a solid QB. Just because the team selected CK early, it is not a certainty that:
1) He will be able to step into a starting role.
2) The team will put him on the field, over Smith (especially if Smith plays well), just because he is a high draftee).

In other words, you have already determined Alex's fate, and that is still an unknown, thus premature.
