Funny article and a nice way to keep it light.

Ostler is great. I was reading his column in the Chroncile yesterday (print only), and it was pretty funny with a lot of random comments on current sports news.

Guys, keep quoting the posts and all that happens is you extend their lives. Where are the originals? Think about it.

That article made me warm up to a possible Smith 2011 campaign || that much more.

I like the fact that he added the comical spin. With that it wasnt that bad at all.

We've been through most all of it before x100. I just liked how Ostler summed up all the key points, with humor. Typical of him and a major reason he is my favorite sports read in the Bay Area.

One point he made that I haven't seen discussed much is that previous OCs were either incompetent or non-nurturing. This was a rather subtle dig at Norv Turner.

One valid criticism of Turner over the years was that his success was more a result of player talent than his ability to "coach up" a team. When he was in Dallas this was definitely the case. He jumped on that little train when it was loaded with HOF and Pro Bowl talent. As OC, it was virtually impossible to screw up. In subsequent HC stops, the talent he inherited seemed to hit at ceiling under Turner. The current SD situation is a good example. That team is very talented - should have been to at least two SBs by now, yet is has struggled to even make the playoffs. Turner, though a good Xs and Os guy and good play caller, just does not seem to have the ability to nurture/coach up a team and its players to reach their potential.

Please let's not turn this into another "excuse/not excuse" sand box. I won't play there. I mention this only to point out the level of insight Ostler brings to the table. In this case, in one passing reference, he shows he has a good understanding of why Norv Turner-directed teams have not reacher their potential. The guy understands the game but can't teach it as well as he understands it. From Washington to Oakland to San Diego, his lack of nurturing skills have been exposed.

Now THAT was an excellent job of manipulating the facts to lend legitimacy to your point of view . . . erroneous or not. Along the way, let's just discard everything that Turner's star pupil ever said about the guy How could that possibly stand in the face of manufactured innuendo.

But you make your point with such style and articulation, who would have the heart to dispute it. Well done.

To ascribe your level of subtle deduction to Olster is a little much, though. I don't think that he is quite so erudite. I think that he is much plainer.

Gems like this one is why I get so much pleasure out of visiting the 'zone.
