let Franklin walk...he fk'd our continuity last year and will hold out again if Tagged.
Draft CB in the first round. Move Clements to S or Nickel.

Resign Franklin. Nothing available in FA and cant afford to draft high at NT

Resign Lawson. If theres a salary cap no one will give him big bucks because he cant rush the passer

Get a Pass Rusher in the 2nd or 3rd Rd.

Let Goldston walk. He beats up on weak teams and gets burned by decent QBs.

Instant Defense!
Extend franklin
let haralson be a back up
bring in a safety to compete with goldson and mays or smith
dl seems set
resign lawson if we can for a fair price
resign macdonald and give him more playing time
keep clements as a third cb keep spencer as a second and draft petersen or prince AND get a fa cb

top 5 d
Clements will never move to safety. He will restructure his contract or be cut. IMO he will restructure and be our #1 next years and cover the slot in nickel packages. We will draft a CB or pass rusher at 7. I'm leaning twords cb, Peterson or Prince.

I agree Clements seems suited to match up against the slot receiver.

Von Miller lost weight so he could do well at the combine but I believe he'll play next year at around 245 pds.But this kid is going to have some really nice numbers next year because he's really, really mastered the dip shoulder move. The kid is already better than Brooks is ever going to be and would help the defense tremendously.

I thought folks thought he came into Senior Bowl light and that he was trying to put the weight back on for the combine.

Alot of these kids start training differently for the Senior Bowl and the Combine to have electric workouts.Von Miller is normally 240+ but he'll need to have a nice forty time for the combine(4.55-4.60) to raise even more eyebrows and a lighter weight will help.Remember,Patrick Willis trimmed up for the combine and blew the roof off then settled into his playing weight for the season.
Dump the 3-4, resign Manny as SLB, and snatch up a top RE to compete with Brooks and possibly LaBoy.

... yeah, I know... Fangio... the 3-4 will stay.
Dump Lawson.

Tag Franklin.

Draft CB or pass-rusher with number 7 pick.

Only bring Goldson back if price is right.

Move Clements to SS if he takes pay cut. If not, cut him.
I think ultimately we will seek to retain most of the guys on the squad. I really don't think thre will be much of a market for any of our FA's when you combined their lack of stellar individual performances last season with shortened barganing periods. So between Tags, the weak barganing positions of the players in question, and the inabiliity to really explore replacements in FA prior to the draft we will keep most of these guys. Without a pre draft FA period most teams will have to plug holes without being able to upgrade current talent. Ultimately I think we will hope for Von Miller to fall to us otherwise we will get a CB. So if anyone won't be retained it is Lawson, but only if we are able to Draft Miller. That being said Fangio did all of his blitzing up the middle and let his OLBs handle the run/pass d at Stanford. No reason we couldn't see that.
Ultimately it just sucks that we can't tap the FA market right now. It would make this all alot clearer if we could land some key pieces like a Corner or a pass rusher in FA's before the draft.
With the exception of Von Miller I would like to see us draft a corner and go after one on the FA market. TO be honest with you I'm happy with most of our guys on D. I do agree that it would be nice to upgrade many of the people mentioned in this thread but ultimately there is still upside in all of them.

Here is a question? What do people think about Carlos Rogers as a FA replacement for AB?
For the life of me I cannot figure out why Clements seems reluctant to move to Safety. Maybe we should have ROnnie lot explain to him the benefits of the shift on his career.

... because he doesn't want to be perceived as a "failed CB" in the eyes of his friends, family, and football community?

Hence my point about having Lott talk to him. Nobody percieves Lott as a failed corner.
