It's going to be a long off-season.

Especially with Free Agency not being there. I mean the worse part of the year is after the draft, then you have those like "non mandatory (but your ass better be here)" practices and they bring the rookies in. Here's the deal...by all accounts Sopoaga had his best season in 2010. Is that good enough? I say no...it's true there aren't a lot of Justin Smith's around, but a potential solution to our current DL dilemma is to upgrade both NT and LDE. That could happen by taking both Cameron Jordan and Phil Taylor. Before you say Taylor's too big, I'd counter that by saying he's exceptionally quick, which is a prerequisite for Fangio's 3-4. Besides, the team's not going to franchise Franklin, leaving a pretty big hole in the middle. It's true, your OLB's are your primary pass rushers, but by upgrading your DL, you actually help the overall QB pressures. The LB's get more help up front...who gets the pressure and/or sack isn't the issue, it's the pressure itself. One of the things Fangio's noted for (a la Capers) is a lot of movement...up front (a la Raji dropping into coverage and taking it to the house) and with your LB's. He uses different DL stunts, too. But, you must have the DL to execute that...and other than JS, we don't have it. Add Jordan and Taylor and now Fangio has a lot more to work with on the DL.

The 9ers have a great pass rushing 3-4 DE in Smith. His numbers would go up a lot if there was any pressure from the OLB. Surround Smith (hell the whole team) with a double digit outside threat and watch their stats inflate.

I like both players the only thing is, is Cameron Jordan good enough to pay #7 money to? I think we could trade back to the teens and grab him and add another pick, Hopefully someone falls to us another team loves. It only takes 1 team to love a player. As for the 2nd rd. I'm really torn between 4 ppl. and Phil Taylor is one of them. The other 3 are Marvin Austin who I believe is a top 20 talent but he hasn't played football in a year and has off the field issues. He's the DT that Fangio likes on his D-line. I think he plays at like 315 where Taylor plays at 340 and Austin is a freak when it comes to athlethisim. The other 2 picks are Bruce Carter from North Carolina (which I really have us taking b/c I want us to go Prince at #7) but the big sleeper is DeMarco Murray RB Oklahoma... I know it's not a huge need but we have our all around back in Gore, we have our big back in Dixon, Murray's a 4.4 40 guy (4.37 is personal best) but he's so much more then speed, he has better hands then Peterson when he came out and he can make all the runs. Inside and out. You let him split carries and learn from Gore for a few years your going to do 2 things. 1. Your going to extend Gore's career and 2. Your going to give us one hell of a stud in a few years to team w/ Dixon. We have some tough choices in Rd. 2 and that's if you consider who I honestly believe should be our QB of the future Christian Ponder climbing draft boards. I had us taking him in the 3rd rd. but after his showing all week at the Senior Bowl, if he has a great combine/workout he could easily jump to the high 2nd rd. Now what do we do? We have 2 DT's that we need b/c like u said Franklin won't be tagged. We have a pass rush OLB who was one of the best linebackers in the country coming into 2010 but got hurt, we have a RB who could be an Adrian Peterson type player in a few years and we have a QB who could be the future..... Harbaugh and his men have A LOT of work cut out for them, if our 2nd rd. pick isn't one of them I would be shocked... unless 1. they're already gone or 2. someone falls to us that we just can't pass on.

In terms of the 3-4 defense, you don't usually have a pass rushing threat at the defensive line position. For sure, you want the DE and NT positions to penetrate their gaps to apply pressure on the QB and take away the run game, but not in the same context as a 4-3 DE. In fact, Osi Umenyiora would be a OLB in our 3-4 defense.

I do agree that we should always be looking to improve the DE spot opposite of Smith because Sopoaga is only an average starter. But that's lower on our priority list compared to OLB, QB, CB, and potentially FS.

I concur, however if the next Reggie White or Bruce Smith is there at 7(not saying he is) Dont we take him no matter what??(IF we go front 7 with that pick of course)

Always get a kick out of the four man line being the "classic" line. My HS team was one of the first to switch to the four man line long ago and the five man line is still in my mind as the classic...five on five.

J Smith is one of the very best and it wouldn't hurt to try and find another like him.

As much as i want to draft one of those stud CB's @ 7, if we get a passrusher, and can find a way to sign (at least 2 of the 3) champ bailey / cromartie / or asomugha we could fix our defense in one offseason.

this right here.

osi would be a terrible 3-4 end. the team would run at him all day long and just play 3 yards and a cloud of dust(but get 4+ yards every play) he would get swallowed by the G and T allowing them to get to the 2nd level and block the MLB. if you are talking about getting a giant pass rusher well than you/we would want mathias kiwanuka.
