49ers Announce Two New Coaching Additions | Page 2

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday that they have named Reggie Davis tight ends coach and Peter Hansen defensive assistant/quality control coach. Davis, 34, joins the 49ers after spending the last three years as the running backs coach at Oregon State University. Under his tutelage, RB Jacquizz Rodgers became the first freshman in the history of the Pac-10 Conference to earn its Offensive MVP award in 2008, after rushing for 1,253 yards and earning All-America honors for his efforts. Prior to joining the Beavers in 2008, Davis was the running backs coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas from 2005-07. In 2004, he served on Jim Harbaugh’s San Diego coaching staff, tutoring the tight ends and assisting with special teams. From 2000-04, he worked as a speed and strength coach for Play Fast Athletics in San Diego. A University of Washington standout, Davis went on to play two seasons alongside Harbaugh as a San Diego Charger (1999-2000), appearing in 26 games (three starts). Hansen spent the past two years as a defensive assistant on the Stanford Cardinal coaching staff, working closely with 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in film breakdown, scouting reports and practice preparation. He had previously served as a strength and conditioning intern for the Cardinal, in 2008. An assistant coach at Palo Alto High School for four seasons (2004-07), Hansen worked primarily with the Vikings tight ends and defensive ends. He also served as the team’s defensive coordinator during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns. A two-sport athlete at the University of Arizona, Hansen majored in economics and played both football and basketball. He blocked seven field goals and point after attempts during his career, and earned second team all-conference honors as a special teams performer, in 2000. Hansen was a member of the Wildcats basketball team during the 1999-2000 and 2001-02 seasons. Hansen played professional football for the Cannes Iron Mask in Cannes, France, in 2003, and later played professional basketball for Club Falcon in Copenhagen, Denmark, during the 2003-04 season. the only coaching change I don't like is not retaining Pete Hoener. Hoener took the same job with the Panthers and is known as one of the best TE coaches in the game. He did a nice job developing VD and Walker. I guess Roman is really the head TE coach anyway.

That's what I thought too, but it doesn't look like the case.

The press release issued by the Niners today did not mention Roman’s role with the tight ends. I’ll update once I hear back from a team spokesman. (UPDATE: Davis is the primary tight ends coach).

is it just me or does it seem like we have an entirely gigantic coaching staff. idk how many it takes to fill a standard coaching staff, obviously there is someone for every position but it seems like we have been hiring a coach or two almost every other day now. i like the people selected dont get me wrong it just seems like we have a large coaching staff. dont we have like 2 coaches at some spots like d-line for example?

We had a crap ton of coaches last year under Singletary. You will see more coaches at positions with a large amount of players to it. Secondary and LB positions can have 2 coaches each. We had that under Singletary. You have at least 8 LBs and at least 8 DBs on a team at all times. You can't really give enough attention to all of those by having two coaches total.

Besides adding quality and offensive/defensive assistants is minimal cost to the 49ers payroll. And it reduces the logistical work the core coaching staff needs to do prior to gameday and practices.

By the way, what in the world is V.Davis going to learn from a scrub football player that only caught one TD in his whole career? In Davis's mind he is the best of all time, I can't wait to see how he takes learning from this 34 yr old form scrub.
