FS, SS positions?

I'd be interested to know if the new DC also uses the saftey positon interchangably? In theory it sounds good, but practically speaking most teams dont have two great safties. Could you imagine trying to find a guy that can mirror Ed Reed, Troy or some of the better safties in the league? We are better off with a true strong and free saftey and find guys that do that one position well. Otherwise, it's like jack of all trades master of none.

Everyone keeps talking about CB, like that's the reason our pass D sucks.

Did anyone watch the top Ds this year play without their free safeties? The Jets and Steelers both really struggled when they lost Leonhard and Polomalu. They have great Ds, but without those players their CBs look way more beatable.

My point is, I think what's really held the 9ers back for years is that we haven't had good safeties. I'd rather see us use a high pick on a free safety than a CB.

I said the same thing last year, btw, when I really wanted Earl Thomas. I still think Mays could be a good player, but I don't think he's ever going to be the type of center fielder that allows CBs to play with more confidence.

I wanted thomas also, however whats done is done. Where does Rahim Morris (I think thats his name, the S from UCLA figure to be drafted? I liked him, although this year he didn't do as well stats wise.

Rahim Moore. He should probably be the top safety and be a late first early second rounder. I wish we could get him, but he wont fall to our second. Trade back up?

I know safety is the discussion here but drafting and/or signing a fa CB is a bigger priority. There is the possibility Clements gets moved to SS or FS,his play at CB has been on the decline.

I just feel like our CBs look worse than they really are because we don't have a good FS. And until we get that, our CBs will not look good, no matter we have back there.

The best year our CBs have had recently was the year before last, when Goldson played reasonably well. That's not a coincidence.

But yes, your point that Nate could be gone is a good one. If he stays, even if it's at CB, I think he will play just fine if he has a good FS that he can count on.
Don't be shocked if Balke picks a CB and safety within the first four rounds.

I feel you. Though safety is a major concern, but I don't see any Eric Berry's in this draft. CB would still be a bigger priority though. But the coverage skills of our safeties is laughable. They don't make any plays on the ball unless it's thrown right at them.

Thanks thats him-maybe, if we don't get pass rush specialist, use the extra picks to move up if you can find a sucker but keep the third rounder for a possible QB. If we don't see a rush specialist then I wouldn't mind a draft of Peterson or Prince then Moore and Stanzi in the first three picks. but that might be wishing to hard.

Mays at SS, Smith at Coverage FS

R.Moore from UCLA with our 2nd, who eventually steps in to the FS position

Let Goldson walk

4th Safety a Special Teams star, like Spillman, or maybe C.Taylor makes a strong comeback, Maragos looks like he could be a good special teamer too

Clements ego too big to move to safety,he was asked about it a while backed and scoffed at the idea, I doubt he's on the team

LCB- Amukamara
RCB- Spencer
Depth- Brown, Brock, Adams
FS- Moore, Smith
SS Mays, Spillman

i have confidence ed donatell will be able to see what positions were causing the problems in the secondary---i think all 4 actually caused problems.

We will be drafting a safety , a cb, pass rusher in the draft---QB might be the only position on the O side---although maybe WR, OL, rb--who knows--all these new coaches and harbaugh will be watching the film ( ) and seeing what the heck happened.

Everything depends on the type of coverages we play. I mean we ran alot of strange coverages last year with our corners way back off ball and spencer on one and one coverage with zone help. I don't think we will be playing such a weird coverage scheme this year. Maybe Clements can shine if he runs bump... With safeties over the top. Mays needs to rely on his speed less because he's not the only fast one now. he has to get his technique straitened out. But people tended to expect him to live up to the hype generated on the webzone instead of realizing he's just another rookie who's got to work out the kinks...
LCB - AMUKAMARA
RCB - SPENCER
SLOT CORNER - T.BROWN
FS - CLEMENTS
SS- MAYS

OR
LCB AMUKAMARA
RCB ASOUMAGHA
SLOT T.BROWN
FS - SPENCER
SS - MAYS

Move Clements to FS and then have either Clements/Reggie Smith there, and Taylor Mays at SS. Then draft another SS.

This is good. I don't know if Moore starts right away..

To be completely honest, who played well in the secondary this year? We can solve our problems with the secondary through free agency instead of taking a risk on a guy like Prince Amukamara and saving the 1st and 2nd picks for pass rushers or interior D linemen. He got lit up by Justin Blackmon from OSU who is an NFL caliber receiver, whats he going to do against receivers who are better than Blackmon week in and week out? Patrick Peterson is going be taken before the 7th pick so we shouldnt waste our pick with the 2nd best CB and take the best available player.

I know, the CBA makes this extremely complicated. But if Jed's serious about winning like he says he is, he should take a page outta Eddie D's book and put some money into the team. We're in one of the biggest markets in the country and have one of the most storied franchises in the NFL; its ridiculous to be as bad as we are. We hired a good coach in Harbaugh, I'm confident he'll make the offense 3x better with the weapons we already have. We need to give Fangio some good players in the secondary. The draft will take care of our front 7.

CUT Nate Clements - he's not worth his contract AT ALL
CUT Shawntae Spencer - there's better talent available
CUT Dashon Goldson - blows too many coverages and gets burned down field
CUT Reggie Smith - he's a back up at best

SIGN Nnamdi Asomugha,- shut down corner worth every penny
SIGN Champ Bailey - says hes ready to play FS
SIGN Brent Grimes or Ike Taylor - both are solid CB's
Taylor Mays at SS - I think he can succeed with good talent and mentors around

Totally agree.....none of the current safeties on the roster can really cover well, or if they can they sure haven't shown it recently. My suggestion would be to move Clements to FS for this year (and if he won't move and/or restructure his contract, then release him and draft a rookie FS that can cover), and have Goldson (a former CB in college) play SS.

Next, evaluate all of the secondary guys this year under a new regime and then make changes next year if possible.

The problem is that none of the safeties now on the roster are really playmakers...and a good defense really needs at least one playmaking safety. At least with Clements and Goldson, the team has a chance to make some plays.
