Michael Smith made a good point about how hiring a "rock star" big name head coach isn't always the best way to go. You look at successful teams like Green Bay and Atlanta who hired at the time the Offensive coordinator of the worst offense of all time in Mike McCarthy and Atlanta who hired the most boring man in the world in the Jag's Defensive Coordinator Mike Smith. Both coaches were about as unsexy of picks as possible but have been to date amazing hires.
It make sense. We all want Gruden or Cowher or Holmgrin or Harbaugh. However the big name isn't always the best name. Food for thought.
This is why I keep preaching the name 'Marty Morneweg'.
I like him as an OC. However I can never forget about him deferring in over time. Single worst head coaching move of all time. Like Norv I'm not sure he is head coaching material. But I will give you this, he has earned a second chance to prove me and other critics wrong. There is no doubting the quality of the job he has done as a coordinator.
lol, that's the same thing I think of every time I hear his name but it WAS with the Lions so it's almost like he was destined for failure anyway. But I'm sure he wouldn't do something that dumb again, and we know he's a hell of a coordinator so he may be a viable option.
Id be ok with Morty. I just think that Michael Smith's point makes sense. We shouldn't rush for the big name, Shanahan type hiring, just because we are desperate. Following the Redskins model whether its free agent signings or coaching hirings, is just foolish. I really hope the ownership does their due diligence and doesn't get blinded by a big name. I'm sure the fan base would have a huge backlash if we hired a non-sexy name. But I'll take quality over name value any day.
I do agree with you regarding the due diligence. But as far as not going for the big name: isn't that what we've been doing (and ultimately paying for) the past 6 years?
Mike Nolan
Mike Singletary
Jimmy Raye
Even players...
Drafting Alex Smith. He was the project QB who we obviously were incapable of developing.
I think it's time to go for the "sexy" choices and make a splash. If it doesn't work out...well we certainly can't say Jed didn't put his best foot forward.
I say bring in a Gruden or a Holmgren etc. It's time to go balls out. ONE year rebuilding period. None of this "5 year plan" with a head coach who's trying to "find his way..." etc. Too many people get stuck on storylines instead of results. I'm sorry but guys like Bill Walsh, players like Montana and Rice...are ONCE in a lifetime. They were great players with great storylines. But that's done now. We can't "create" storylines. We got lucky.
Now it's time to move forward to the year 2011 where legit winning teams go for solid "big name" choices.
