We could be a good 3-4 team if we upgraded our OLBs, or we can be a good 4-3 team if we upgrade our DEs. Right now we are not really good at either.

What do you think of Ray Mac? I'm of the opinion he would be a stud DE or Tackle in a 4-3. The guy is sooooo quick.

I dont think he is fast enough around the edge to get to the passer. He has good quickness of the ball, but lacks the foot speed to play on the outside.

Apparently I'm in the minority but I just cant see us transitioning to the 4-3 and being better. Sure we can do it by putting Smith at end and say he can do it because he did in Cinci, but that was years ago, plus hes one of the best 3-4 end around. Also who would start opposite of him? Ray Mac? Sure but I dont think that makes us better. I dont believe Parys can be a productive DE either. Franklin would prolly do alright but he does alright now so thats a wash. Also our linebackers fit a 3-4. TKO would most likely have to play the inside backer position because hes not very fast and Willis would have to be moved outside much like Jon Beason was moved outside this year in Carolina for a bit. No thanks.
Sure we could move to a 4-3 but I havent heard one legit reason why it would make us better.

One reason? Well, our linebackers aren't that great so we aren't generating much pass rush. And apart from Franklin's pre contract year we haven't really had a 3-4 nose tackle since we started, and without a NT you are wasting your time in 3-4. So, no pass rush. No NT.
How dat?

3-4 all the way.
Our talent (particularly DBs) and execution are the problem. Not the scheme.
This team does not need to go through a 3 year re-learning process for a new scheme. Such a move would be reactionary and set whatever progress this team makes next season back a few years.
A new defensive scheme is not necessary.

I see you're argument but I'll respectfully disagree. I think out linebackers are solid. I hope re resign Lawson and pick up a rusher in the draft or free agency. Manny is great at holding the edge and is great in coverage which is good for a 3-4.
I think the stem of our pressure problems in from schemes. We don't blitz nearly enough of the time like a Pitt or Baltimore. Granted we dont have a rusher like them but still.
Also Franklin is a solid NT and eats blocks. Cant ask much more than that although he's prolly gone next year.

How about we draft for those positions instead of trying to change the entire D? Just a thought.

I think our run D improves. Our pass rush improves with Rmac and Smith off the edges. The only question is where to put Willis--maybe switch him to the weakside in obvious passing downs with Mlaw covering the TE. He's our best pass rusher and him with Mac and Smith would generate a lot of QB pressure.
It's not like we're getting any pressure or stopping the run now. I know we're 7th in the league in rushing yards allowed but I think that has to do with teams knowing they can carve us up threw the air at any time.
