I have been a loyal fan of this franchise for twenty years. In all that time I can't remember feeling more dissappointed at the end of the season. I have lived through some tough seasons but the team always seemed to be at or near my expectations. I knew the team was terrible when Erickson took over. Winning two games that season was exactly what I expected. I drank the kool-aid when Nolan was here but I never felt like he had enough talent to put the team in contention. This year I finally allowed myself to believe that we were going to start dominating again. We had the talent, the coaching, and the team leadership. We had the speed in Ginn, the massive offensive line to plow through defenses, and the QB question was finally settled. We were going to see the Alex Smith that we had been waiting for... How could I have been so foolish? Should I have seen this coming? Was it my fault for thinking that the rookies up front would mature quickly? Should I have known that Alex Smith was going to be tentative and mistake prone? Did anyone expect the secondary to be THIS bad? Finally, How did Singeltary go from rising star to one-trick pony so fast? These questions and more have been swirling through my head for the past 15 weeks and I felt like I needed to purge them from my system. So, here my thoughts on some of the hot button topics we face:

Head Coach: My guy going forward would definitely be Gruden. He's an offensive minded head coach with experience working with QBs. Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson flourished under his guidance. If we bring in a veteran QB, Gruden would be our best bet to get the most out of them. That being said, I don't see the Yorks going away from Singeltary yet. They might suprise me, but I doubt it. If they do stick with Sing, I can only hope that he has learned his lessons from this grueling season.

Offensive Coordinator: I actually think that Mike Johnson has shown flashes of potential. If Sing is kept I would like to see him come back and have more say over the play calling and prep work.

Quarterback: Goodbye Alex. You seem like a nice guy and I wish you well, but it is better for both of us if you just move on. That being said, everyone seems to have an opinion on what to do with this position. Many want us to take a QB in the first round of the draft. Others want us to sign a Free Agent. Two names come to mind for me: Carson Palmer and Donovan McNabb. I live in the Cincinnati area and the fan base is exhausted with Palmer. He has been a shadow of his former self. It may be injuries, knee and elbow, that have slowed him, but play calling and talent have not helped him. McNabb fits much better if we decide to go with a WCO coach. Ultimately, vets will be available and that would be our best option. I'm all for drafting a QB for the future, but we don't have time to watch them struggle for a few seasons. Sign Troy as the back-up.

the talent hasn't helped him? dude has Ochocinco and TO for his damn WR's.

Ochocinco is having a terrible season and for every play TO makes he drops two others. The offensive line has been worse than ours and the run game is terrible. I'm not saying Palmer is blameless, but the rest of the team has been putrid.

There have been games where they were in position to win and Palmer just couldn't do it. He deserves a big part of the blame in CIN
I dont think sing will be kept... Gruden is the best bet at coach for sure.HE would bring the west coast offense back were it belongs.. although the Stanford coach and QB would rule...thats highly doubtful.

Best bet at QB is to trade for Kolb. Since we have nothing to trade in a QB (Smiths are both FA) you can offer up carr and a draft pick.. He is a West Coast Qb and very young with talent.
Mcnabb is garbage and old. he also has a great OC and coach and still was horrible this year... Never won any big games philly hated him.
Palmer is a option but i don't think is the real answer for niner fans.

Outlook Niner fans are on the brink and if the Yorks dont buy a coach and QB this franchise will be doomed and so will its stadium deal...who is gonna pay to singletards decline 8-8 to whatever and 9..EVeryone knows we have a talented team thats why we were favored to win the west. Only blind owners wouldnt make a change...

Top needs for team are QB,G.OLB,cb and DL
Must sign bass and frankln and or lawson and goldson.

just my 2cents

That just isn't true at all. Cinci's O line is always very solid and this year is no diff. Palmer is one of the least sacked qb's in the league. He's got Shipley and Gresham to use as well as Andre Caldwell, 5 legitamate receiving options and just throws pick-6s like they're going out of style.

I was thinking the girl jumping was actually a dude doing the Buffalo Bill impersonation.
Karma, I feel your pain! However, Singletary staying would be another year of deteriorating team chemistry. I like Gruden as a quick fix coach, but see the need for a GM and am not sure he is up to GM/HC. Mike Johnson may be a gem in the rough, and if Gruden comes in perhaps he should stay; but with Singletary as coach there is the need for a strong OC who has the owners ear. Norv was close to that but wanted to be HC, which is the problem...good OCs become HCs. DCs are easier to keep for some reason.

You left one word out of your title: Retrospection, progression and depression.
