No point in putting Troy Smith, Alex Smith or David Carr in, because we already know what we have with all of 'em. f**k it, just put Nate Davis in and see what the guy can do. Could it really get any worse?

We have to look at the film first to see if that's a good idea.

IF we got eliminated, then NO we still don't sit the starters. You work the younger guys like Bowman, RJF, and Adams in a little more though. If they don't plan on resigning Goldson, they need to put Mays and Smith in there as our safeties. Since Laboy went down, they can work in Tukuafu in place of Evans but they really need to activate Gibson and let him get after the passer and see what he's got.
since week 16 is a must win game no matter if St. Louis loses or not vs KC, we will play our starters. IF we lose, then yes, Bring up Nate against the Cardinals. We have nothing to lose and we can see what he can do with our first team against their first team defense.
But I'm not a fan of sitting position players the whole game, we pay them, they are competitors, they play. That simple. If you have someone at QB that you would like to take a look at, then that's different but every other position, you let your money makers play and rotate some younger guys, who you want to get a closer look at, a little more.

As I said in the Nate Davis thread, what would it hurt? Shanahan is sitting McNabb since the season is lost anyway, in order to see what he's got in his backups. Why not our young guys? Could we be more pathetic under this regime? At least if we're playing the inexperienced, we'd have an excuse for looking so terrible! Not to mention, we'd get a look at then in actual game conditions instead and not just camp or preseason. I believe this is especially applicable in guys like Davis, Boone, Mays (though we already know much about him, he could use more experience before next season) and whomever else they have high expectations of. Get them in there!

I've never heard of anyone sitting their starters unless they already clinched a spot in the postseason.

No. You play the game to win. Playoffs or not. I'm sure some starters have incentive based contracts and would be pissed off if they got bench for non playoff protection reasons.

This is a HC decision. Sing will not be around next year so why would he care to give this guys more playing time?

It's immaterial if it's a "good idea or not" for two reasons:
1) Nobody does it unless they've clinched a playoff spot (as Silky just said).
2) Even if it was done occasionally, a coach who needs to try to keep his job ABSOLUTELY wouldn't do this. He'd be an idiot to do this.
