49ers belief that speed is highly overated is starting to effect us...

he did that sh*t twice...once in college, and he did it again in the pros!!! i like to see cocky little primadonnas like him get crushed after catching a pass, much like i got to see a few weeks back...that said, i do feel we lack a guy with toughness and speed...wwould help to have someone like megatron @ WR( just a comparison to someone w/ toughness and speed) and defensively, well we have plenty of toughness but Willis is our fastest defender and thats' just not right

more and more teams are starting to draft little, speedy guys. And guess what? Most defenses can't counter that speed. Time to get on board.

Some of those wide receivers are affected for sure, but they are also effective.

Coaches can be the same way. You could say Sing is affected in how he views his filosofy of coaching, but clearly this has not been effective.

Our draft philosophy is to obtain all the plow horses that we can.

LOL, it's that type of mentality of players that has given the Niners their current crop of "speed." Dude is a freaking playmaker, albeit with some bonehead moves, and yesterday proves that.

Anyway, watching the Eagles/Giants and the Packers/Patriots games yesterday makes me realize how slow our team looks, or is it just me?

Ahh... remember how proudly we used to talk about "Nolan Guys" a couple years back?!? Turns out they were slow guys that could be controlled!

I vividly recall KNBR interviews of Nolan and McCloughan when they both explained how important it was to draft players that were big at their position. "It is a big man's sport," was the common refrain. "All things being equal, you want the bigger guy."

I agree that our personnel guys have eschewed the fast smaller guys over the last four years. Yet I watch New England win with Welker and Woodside, small but quick WR and RB. And these kind of guys do not cost much in terms of draft position or FA money. We could dramatically improve if we only had a bright, clever GM who knew how to pull the right levers.

Excellent thread...rack him. Rack him for sure. His scenarios are spot on. Rack him.

There is a middle ground between what Oakland is doing with the whole speed thing and what this front office was doing with the whole "size" thing.

I really wish whoever is calling the shots come draft time picks the best players...regardless of their 40 time or how tall they are and how much they weigh.

There is an abundance of terrific players who don't fit the so called "prototypical numbers"

If we all remember Jerry Rice wasn't a 4.3 guy either. Wes Welker is one of the toughest SOB's out there and he's a shrimp.

If a guy can play...draft him. If anything those guys try harder because they're always an underdog and always being told they can't do this and that, meanwhile athletic freaks like Vernon Gholston or Lavar Arrington are highly disappointing.
