This was suppose to be Alex breakout year, no excuses etc. but here we are still with excuses and what ifs!

that's what happens when your HC is an idiot. I have a team built to run a spread offense so lets run the ball up the gut every singlet play and then try and convert a 3rd and 15+. You can't expect a QB to be successful when playcalling puts them in a position to fail. It was the same way with Troy Smith. The only difference is that with Troy Smith he doesn't know enough of the playbook to make adjustments later in the game.

I agree with what you're saying but to me Alex is no different than Troy or Shaun Hill for that matter. All has had success at times only to falter when teams have film on them. With that being said Troy is 3-2 which put us in a position to even talk playoffs. 2 of his wins are against div. opponents (Rams & Cardinals) and no one really believed we would go to G.B and win that game w/o Frank Gore!

I just don't see the logic to put in Alex after going 1-5!

Because Alex Smith was progressing while Troy Smith was digressing. Alex played the harder portion of the schedule.

Alex Smith progressing? ? When? not this year for sure.

really? So you're saying that Alex Smith did not progress once Michael Johnson took over as the OC?

haters

Alex Smith was leading the league in interceptions by week 4. He was not progressing.

Kind of helps when your number one Receiver hits the dirt on 3 or 4 of those and tips a couple more into the hands of the nearest Defender.

Sadly you'll keep on this argument for the rest of your life and won't understand how ridiculous it is.

but but but Alex Smith is the suxors!!!

Oh knowz, anz he canz evenz get a stop on Defense. What a waste of a number 1 pix.

Anyways, the only game that we haven't had a conservative mentality was the Rams game except Troy MADE PLAYS himself even with all the penalties and still piled on 356 yards (more than Alex has EVER thrown for) and a WIN against a "6-6" team. Alex on the other hand BLEW plays against a "6-6" team (Seahawks) and made a great throw to Crabtree (Kudos) but THANK GOD Gore ripped off that 61 yard run vs the Raiders because our offense wasn't doing ANYTHING against that other "6-6" team and he threw the ball 33 TIMES for ONLY 196 yards.

It is plain and simple, Alex is not the answer. You defend this guy like you are his Agent and I do not understand. What has he done that leads you to believe he can be successful? He does not beat good teams, he is scared to give his WR's a chance to make a play down the field, his release is slow, he is VERY athletic but rarely uses it, he contines to throw the ball high and off target (even on check downs and swing passes), he makes COSTLY mistakes over and over and over and over. Why all the love for this guy? If you are a fan of the 49ers like you say you are, you would not want him starting anymore. We must rebuild and start over with coaches and in fairness to Alex, he does not need to be apart of a learning process AGAIN for what, the 7th time??? He needs to go somewhere else and start fresh and we need to start fresh as well. He is not the answer and he never will be the answer. he has proved this time and time again

There must be an issue with it, so I apologize. I defend the guy because of haters like yourself who are oblivious to the reality of the offense. You wonder why I want him to be the starter? because David Carr sucks, Troy Smith is even worse and he gives us the best chance at winning. Honestly I can't wait for Alex to finally be off of the 49ers roster. No player deserves to be s**t on as much as he has by both the organization and the fans. When he finally gets signed to another team and actually has legit NFL coaches you will see why he was drafted #1 overall.

Why do you keep saying other posters are "haters" when they do not agree with you about Alex Smith? I support Alex everytime he lines up under center just like I did for the short time David lined up and the games that Troy lined up under there and just like I will be this sunday in hopes that he lights it up or at least does just enough to beat the Seahawks. I am a 49ers fan and I want to win. PERIOD.

I know Alex should not be starting next year and he was misused and Lord knows the coaching staff here SUCKS but numbers don't lie. They may not tell the whole story, but they do not lie and the 49ers are 1-6 in games that Alex starts. He does not get a full loss versus the Panthers since he got hurt but at the same time, he does not get fully excused due to the fact that the panthers are horrible. yes the playcalling went conservative but his 9-19 effort did not help either. I want him to succeed just like the rest of the TRUE FANS but it just is not happening. The relationship between Alex and the 49ers/49ers fans is just tainted and he needs a fresh start.

I will root for him and hope he does good things on his new team (if he is not resigned while we groom a rookie or resigned as a back-up to a consistent veteran QB) and I am sure he can make some things happen. But he is just too inconsistent and it's time to chalk him up as a mistake by our organization.

You're right the numbers don't lie.

But here is a little fun with Math.

Take all the team's records that Alex played and add them up. Subtract 6 and 1 (9ers Win Loss Record) divide by 7 and then do the same for the team that Troy faced but divide by 5.

Notice anything yet? In case you don't understand the point to this exercise it's the average record of the Opposing teams faced by both QBs'.

Numbers do not lie.

Oh I absolutely agree that Alex played a tough schedule and I'm going to tell you why he is not a GOOD Quarterback, because he NEVER BEATS A GOOD TEAM. EVER! Troy has had it easy there is no doubt about that and I'm not blasting either of the guys, I want whoever to succeed under center but It is time to move on. We will be getting some new coaches next year and there is no reason why Alex should have to start over AGAIN for a 7th time. I actually feel bad for the way he was misused here. But I'm a 49ers fan, not an Alex Smith fan and as long as we get someone in here who can produce and WIN, good riddance

I'm not calling you a hater, but there are some clear haters on this forum that refuse to acknowledge anything positive that Alex Smith has done, they refuse to acknowledge the s**tty situation the Alex Smith has been in his entire career and that fact that it does indeed have an affect on the development of a young QB. I don't just blatantly go around attacking people for the fact that they disagree with me. In Carolina we were winning until Alex Smith got hurt regardless of his so called 9-19. so if anything Alex should get a W for that game seems how if he did not get injured we would have won that game.

Alex can't beat the "good teams" with our s**tty p***y defense who can not prevent a team from converting a 3rd down. Just look at the Packers game, the defense allowed the Packers to run over 10 minutes off of the clock.

Why did we get rid of Shaun Hill again? With Hill at the helm we'd be at least .500.

Alex can't beat the "good teams" with our s**tty p***y defense who can not prevent a team from converting a 3rd down. Just look at the Packers game, the defense allowed the Packers to run over 10 minutes off of the clock.

And you can't expect our "s**tty p***y defense" to continue getting stops when our offense has 3+ turnovers every game in those first 5 to start the season with 9 turnovers coming on Interceptions. You see how that goes hand in hand? And yes, that Carolina game was Tied when he got hurt with our next TD coming from a Ray Mac's Interception so NO, I will not fully excuse Alex for that game. He played sub-par against a horrible team. yes the gameplan, as usual was horrible and conservative but the 19 pass attempts he DID get, he did NOT make the most of by completing less than 50% of his passes and this coming off a week against another bad team (at the time) where he had 33 attempts for ONLY 196 yards. That is A LOT of attempts for that little bit of production. That is about 5.8 yards per completion. Thats the reason why they give him the name "Captain Checkdown" although in his defense, the WR's have not helped out alot this year
Since 2006 (maybe his best season) until this year here is a breakdown of the wins and losses. The best team we have beat outside our division under Alex Smith was the 9-7 Broncos 4 YEARS AGO. I have placed the teams we beat in "BOLD".

2006

WINS: STL (8-8), OAK (2-14), MIN (6-10), DET (3-13), SEA (9-7) 2X's, DEN (9-7)

LOSS: AZ (5-11) 2X's, PHI (10-6), KC (9-7) loss 41-0, SD (14-2), CHI (13-3), STL (8-8), NO (10-6), GB (8-8)

2007

WINS: AZ (8-8) and STL (3-13)

LOSS: PIT (10-6), INJURED VS SEATTLE, NO (7-9) First game back, ATL (4-12), SEA (10-6) Loss 24-0

2009

WINS: CHI (7-9), JAC (7-9), AZ (10-6), DET (2-14), STL (1-15)

LOSS: HOU (9-7), IND (14-2) should of won that game, TEN (8-8), GB (11-5),
SEA (5-11) needed to win that game, PHI (11-5)

2010

WIN: OAK (6-6)

LOSS: SEA (6-6), NO (9-3), KC (8-4), ATL (10-2), PHI (8-4)

To sum this up, we just need to move on people. The majority of those wins are against our division and bad teams and almost all of those losses are against good teams. If we can't beat good teams, we are not a good team. It's time to move on. That is all there is to it.

Missed Troy's very first pass to Crabtree vs GB, did ya? Double coverage trailing Crabs and he has a step, but oooops... 5 or so yards overthrown... Crabs looked unamused as he jogged back.

Missed that one?
Alex is still here because the Singletary/Balke regime is just an extension of the Nolan/MCCLueless regime. He will be out when the new coach comes in.
Even Football Outsiders thinks Alex sucks....Link

He's ranked 35th and there's only 32 teams in the NFL. Troy sucks too, but at least he outranks Alex in every category.

This website could be very difficult for the fansboys to comprehend, judging by the weak arguments I see everyday.

The day Alex is released will the greatest 49ers moment since making in the playoffs in 02. The WZ will also be a lot better too when his relatives leave the forum.

I saw a guy in a Alex jersey stocking up on Jergen's lotion at Walmart this morning. He must be ready for gameday.

Not in this system, maybe with Martz. Shaun Hill was grossly incompetent in this system.

He would still have been doing better than the jokers we have parading out at QB right now.
