Our Only Chance Is To Go To The Spread Offense

I personally feel that the season is lost, but if the 49ers want to have any chance of winning their last 4 games with Alex Smith, they need to go with a spread offense. If Coach Dingleberry has "looked at the film" like he claims, he would have noticed that Alex Smith is most productive when he's in the spread offense, which are his roots. This would not only make Alex more efficient, it would allow us to use Brian Westbrook and Ted Ginn in space more, and this should open up the passing game if Alex can display some accuracy and consistency (a big if). It would also throw Seattle off their game-planning for us, which I imagine is based on our conservative and predicatable running offense. Once the decision was made to go with Smith as our QB this year, Coach Ding Dong should have been willing to go to the spread from Day 1 of training camp. Any knowledgeable NFL person knows that in this day and age, you build your team around your quarterback, not your running back. Dingleberry's stone-age "run-first" approach was never the right system for Alex Smith. I'm not saying Alex Smith was the right choice; I'm just saying if you put all your apples in the Alex Smith basket (like they did this year), then put him in an offense that gives him the best chance to succeed. The best I have seen Alex look in the six years he has been here are the limited times that we went to the spread as our primary offense.

With Gore out, Westbrook in, Dixon in, and both Delanie and VD healthy, it would be a great time to try it......but it won't happen, this is Singletary we are talking about here.

I am greatly of the opinion that Singletary forgot every game from the Texans onward in 09, and if he hasn't, he's learned the wrong lesson. Oh yes, coach, let's "focus on the [insert team here]" this week for sure. Never mind that looking back and reflecting on the evidence that the spread offense scored points may suggest something you haven't thought of before.
