While Alex was QB, he was often criticized for being indecisive, for unnecessarily throwing the ball away or for checking down, for which some derisively labeled him "Captain Checkdown."

I give Alex credit for being smart and reasonably experienced, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt that it was because he couldn't find open receivers downfield. Occassionally, the TV camara would look downfield and you could see that the receivers were covered and were not breaking open.

Alex did what any competent QB would do, and he went elsewhere with the ball. Often, we would see Vernon go downfield and he would not turn around when the QB desparately wanted to throw to him. This happened again near the end of yesterday's game, only this time Troy was the victim.

Bottom line: our receivers often let our QBs down. If its Alex, it's Alex's fault. If it's Troy, it's on the receivers.

If this is true, then...

...Troy should still start. He has made better throws in 2 games than Alex has in his entire NFL career.

I ain't saying Troy is the second coming...I'm saying Alex just sucks that bad.

Troy hasn't made better throws than Alex, he just has better luck than Alex does.
The problem with luck is that it eventually evens itself out.

like last week against the Bucs.

That was such a beautiful pass, Alex was pretty flawless in that game. Oh look, Alex Smith in the shotgun with 3 WRs!
Yea b/c putting Smith in the shotgun was the only thing holding him back from being an average QB.

no the same play calling and OLine that made Troy Smith look below average helped out with that.

He's always looked good in the shotgun. He's had some bad plays out of it sure, but for the most part he's been pretty freaking good out of it. Last year his rating was 90+ out of it, with Jimmy Raye as his OC.

He was the common denominator behind our worst offensive performance in years? Wow, without even playing he was the common denominator.

soooo it's ok for Troy Smith to look like a hot pile of dog s**t behind a poor oline and bad play calling but when Alex Smith was behind that same Oline with the same poor play calling it was all his fault?

In a thread about receivers, and their overall impact on the offense, do you have anything to add that would be on topic?
