Leadership lessons from Lott

It's easy to point fingers when a team is not winning. If we start winning this season, where was the leadership at the beginning? It was there, but we just didn't execute.

Yup. This leadership stuff is BS Sing is making up to save his job. It really comes down to execution by the players and gameplanning to put them in the best positions to succeed. Sing also never takes ownership for anything, even the KC game which was a coaching rape.

Sure. If you go by the notion that all members of the team have equal impact on how the team does as a whole.

But no, I am talking about the Head Coach and the Starting Quarterback here.
The 2 most significant positions of leadership on the team, the 2 positions that have the most impact on how a team does.

I get what your saying but it is debatable. Ray Lewis, his leadership is and was more important than Flaco's or any onther QB or maybe even HC that baltamore had/has.
In my opinion anyone can step up and be a leader our team just doesn't have "the" leader. You could argue Vernon, willis, gore.... ect. but I look at it this way, anyone can lead and inspire when things are good but when things dont go the way you want or when times get hard thats when true leaders show. Spikes is the only one close to being that kind of leader in my mind, and Troy Smith last game,

All I'm saying is that Winning has a Leadership effect on its own. Especially for a team that has been rebuilt, was supposed to contend for the playoffs out of a weak-division, and with quality players (either by production or potential) at most if not all the key positions. If we were an expansion team or a rebuilding team, we could have good leaders on the team and still have a losing record, and I understand and accept that for the reasonable amount of time it takes to rebuild.

The Ray Lewis model works, but I say it is the rare exception than the more common trend of sustained success in the NFL. Same goes for the mid 80s Bears that Singletary wants oh so much for this team to emulate. (And they had Buddy Ryan!) You look at the teams that have been good for a while and most of them have either a top flight QB and/or a capable strategist for a head coach.

We have neither. Not even close. Not even average to mediocre. What we have is so abysmal that the rest of the team simply cannot compensate for.

Leadership is one thing....people sucking at their respective jobs is another. I think that's the bigger issue. lol

Leadership will not do it alone. Even the greatest leader will fail if the players around him keep screwing up. It would be interesting to watch Montana playing with Raye as OC, and with our OL and recievers, rather than having Walsh, Clark, Rice and Taylor. He would grow frustrated, and I suspect it would take its toll over time, if it didn't kill him first.

I know, many will contend that a great leader like Montana would get in their face and make his teammates perform. Well, it is not that easy. I suffered through some sad playoff games when Montana played. He was QB for 10 years, and there were more years than not where they lost in the playoffs. It was not always pretty. Even the great Walsh and Montana could not always win.

I saw an ad for a Coaching/Leadership DVD. It had several LEGIT coaches and then Sing. It was comical and sobering at the same time

Sing and Smith should be talking about leadership when their record is 3-6. their faith is sealed.
