Everybody agrees the problem is Smith isn't good enough to build around thus it's built around Gore. If he were a legit qb the offense would have been built around him.

Fixed.

Look at St. Louis the past few years. They built the team around Jackson. They failed.

How do any of us know, the Offensive has never been built around him, 2 defensive minded coaches loved their hard nosed, buttery hands running back and made the choice to build around him. Alex has been held back in every way his whole career here, and while he deserves some of the blame, he gets it way to much from "fans" and while i agree it MIGHT be best for both parties to go their own ways, i see him having success with a good OC, and i see us getting an Offensive minded coach and a new QB and i hope it works out.
Agreed

this is the point where he should have been put in a straight jacket.

Its that simple and yet people refuse to get it.

Listen, if your problem is ACCURACY, then it does not matter what system you're in, you're still going to struggle. If the spread was the best option for Smith, why didn't Norv Turner use it when he was here?

The truth is, Smith does not have one thing he does well at all. He never can hit a receiver in stride, he throws it to hard to receivers that are close, and when a play breaks down, 9 out of 10 times its OVER. Going to the spread would have sent his turnovers skyrocketing, you don't open up the offense more when a QB is struggling with basic throws.
I am/was a Smith guy but to me it is clear the Niners ruined whatever they had in him when he was drafted.

His college HC comes out and says he will stuggle till he knows the O system inside and out. So we change OC every year.

His head coaches are defensive guys who don't know how to handle a young QB and they pick an offensive system that does not fit him.

Seems like everytime management/HC have a chance to step in and correct something they just fall all over themselves again.

Don't get me wrong...Smith is responsible for his poor play regardless of what type of situation he has been put in. But in my eyes at the core (system, coaches and management) the niners did little to help him become a franchise QB.

Our 6 year plan of becoming the Ravens-West has been a total faillure. Until we get a good GM and HC who understands the importance of a QB (it's so sad i actually have to say that) we arent gonna be a great attacking offense.
even the ravens understood that a good QB can make things happen...

One of the biggest mistakes the 49ers have made in regards to Alex Smith is that they have not worked to build the team around him.

The 49ers spent a high first on VD, a high first on Crabtree, and the entire offensive line is either a first or second round draft pick. While the 49ers have made many mistakes, not building up the offense is not one of them.

Of course they took good players with the many high first round picks we've had. That's what you're SUPPOSED to do. Maybe what I should have said is that the SYSTEM is built around the wrong player. Also, just because you've taken good players with high first round doesn't mean that you're building a team around your quarterback. It only means that you SUCKED the year before.
Alex Smith agrees with you.
LMAO

....and once again a good discussion turning into an Alex Smith thread

I agree with most of what you say, sincal. But the one disagreement is this: Alex Smith is NOT inconsistent. He is excellent when he has time and no pressure. When things break down around him, however, he does not maintain his composure. This has been remarkably consistent throughout his entire tenure here.

Steve Young had this issue when he was young (albeit to a smaller degree), giving me hope he could grow through it. But frankly, after six years, his time to grow through it is over.
I watch clips of Bill Walsh, Mike Holgrem and Mike Shanahan when they were with the 49ers and you watch them teaching the QB's how to set up, where to release the ball, footwork and basically how to play QB. The Dr. York teams never invested or believed in that principal. You draft a QB #1 overall and you make sure he is taught the position by a qualified coach.
