Comparing an Alex Smith situation to something that happened to Steve Young? I have never been given a warning here, but you are tempting me to earn my first one.

I'm not comparing players here... i'm comparing situations!! Believe me, I would NEEEEEEEEEEEVERRRRRRRRRR compare Alex Smith to even Jeff Garcia... I'm just saying the scenario is similar.

Wasn't an argument.. He was benched by Coach Seifert against Philly (I think). That was the 94 season run to the SB.

bob, in the "has he arrived" thread, I made an observation of last nights yell fest to that of young and seifert. exchanges like that can do the team and the qb some good. like I said in that thread, I'm not comparing the two quaterbacks, but the incidents are eerily similar-all the way down to them both being week five games against the eagles.

Steve's first problems with the rest of his teammates started in 1991. The receivers were used to Montana, and so was the line. They were all loyal to Joe, and Steve was a bit of an outsider (eventhough he'd been on the team for like 4 years already). Basically Joe never really liked Steve, and teammate loyalty was kind of stacked in Joe's favor. Tough sitch for Steve.
To compound matters, the line complained about Steve's penchant for leaving the pocket and doing his Captain Crazy Legs routine.....the line would get confused about his whereabouts on certain plays.
The receivers, led by Rice complained that Steve's passes (left handed opposite rotation spirals) were hard to catch, and felt that Montana's passes were "perfectly placed and pillow soft"....yes Rice actually said that.
And then Steve started losing games in 1991....the ultimate sin. He got hurt and replaced by Steve "Sonny's nephew" Bono and Bono started playing and winning Montana style.
Steve was almost off the team after that....Eddie was going to ship him to the Raiders. But it didn't happen....thank the stars.

And if i'm not mistaken the next week we played the Lions and we're losing going into the 4th qt. We pulled out the win barely then rolled the rest of the season. Am I saying this will happen this year?? Not at all however I am saying with a wakeup call to Alex and his team sticking up for him this could be the "turning" point. At least my fingers are crossed.... PS this was all from memory, i'm so happy I didn't dream this all up!!

Dudes it'll take a lot of passing yards, Tds and wins for us to become believers. As of now we stand at "sure well win a couple but when push comes to shove well be the same old team"

wow that is eerily similar.
One thing that's different is Young was a good communicator. Smith still talks like a boy

Another thing that's different. Steve Young will sacrifice his body for a first down. Alex Smith will not.

He got into an argument I want to say with a coach? or a player? or something and he showed his team mates he had the fire and the passion and he said after that they really rallied around him and the whole team started playing better b/c they really started playing for him.... Does anyone remember this or did I dream it up?? The reason i'm asking is b/c i'm PRAYING to GOD that last night was our teams "rallying" point. Hopefully they saw the fire in Alex and that he really does care. I know on that last drive he thru the pick but really the O-line didn't help him at all... I"m trying to hold onto anything here guys.... I can't believe we're 0-5.... and with the Raiders coming to town.... we WILL win this week. Mark my words, we WILL win and Alex WILL play well!!!!! GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
may be a simpler situation but you cannot think to compare Young to Smith. Maybe your right, but Davis was the one who picked Alex up and said the team needed you. He has to prove he can be an ELITE QB in this league. The chains are off Alex Smith now....it is up to him to take advantage of it.
