I think if we spread it out and try to move up and down the field in the fashion of most modern NFL offenses, Smith and the rest of the offense will tremendously benefit. Modern offenses move the ball through the air and by causing opposing defenses to commit penalties. Our biggest gain against the Falcons this past Sunday came on a PI call. Did our coaches go back to airing it out after that play? Of course they didn't...

Sounds like this may be Smith's last opportunity.

Did you watch the team last year? We had our most success moving the ball and scoring points when we utilized the spread. That doesn't mean we have to go full spread, but we need to mix it in. Being diverse keeps opposing defenses honest.

Hill has been in a lot of shootouts with the Lions because their D is so bad. He's not the kind of QB who can chuck it all game and not make mistakes. However, I actually trust him more than I do Alex Smith to not throw a bad INT in a 14-10 type game. I don't agree with Sing's ideology that he needs a QB to just be adequate and can win with running and defense. Today's NFL is a QB driven league. But if he wanted to build his team to do that, I think Hill plays that type of game better than Smith does. Now don't get me wrong, i don't want either one of them as the starting QB....but this team would be 2-2 with Hill starting imo.

good point on the spread....I think our skills player fit that type of system much better and actually had success with it last season.

We had success with it the two or three times we used it this past Sunday.

I just hope we use it more. I really want to see Alex flourish, not diminish.

Some stars aren't born over night. Sometimes a switch just needs to go off. If Smith ends up leaving the 49ers, I won't be surprised if he becomes all-pro somewhere else.

I don't think those words of Singletary's will come as a surprise to anyone who follows the team, whether they are a Smith supporter or not. Singletary's words tell me Smith has to win this game or the next guy in line is going to get his shot. I hope for Smith's sake, as well as the team's, they go to the spread offense early and often. Anyhow, if Smith doesn't get it done, I think our playoff hopes are not only shot for this season, but for many seasons to come. The Rams have built a strong foundation and Bradford looks like the future leader of the division. If we fall apart this year, in a year we were expected by nearly everyone to take the division, a massive rebuild project will be underway.
As for Smith having a great game this weekend, it seems daunting. The Eagles defense gave Smith fits last year and with the way he has played thus far, there isn't many encouraging signs that say he will fair any better this time around.

Despite all the doom and gloom previously written, I still do feel like this is our season and I think we're going to defy the odds. Here is to Smith tossing three or more touchdowns and us wiping the Eagles out in The Stick!
That quote doesn't necessarily mean that. It could mean he wants to focus on Alex Smith making sure they have done enough to tap his potential, if any. Offensive line protection, receiver routes, etc.

dude i'm sorry but i have to disagree 100% w the statement that smith might become a probowler elsewhere. he just doesnt appear to have it. if he proves wrong great for him. and his success in the spread was when we were typicall down like 14+ when defenses had relaxed. so i'd take his stats from last year w many grains of salt. and furthermore this year he just doesnt have it.

...well, everyone knew coming into this season that this year was Smith's last chance to prove he can be the QB of the future for the 49ers. I haven't seen anything in his play, or heard anything from the coaches, that would signal that that decision has already been made.
the way things are going, I expect Smith to be our starter all season but to not be here next year.

The spread offense is the modern NFL offense. Alex Smith is lights out in it.

Watch that video of his game trying drive against the Saints. Do you realize Kyle Orton is leading the league in passing? That is how Denver plays on nearly every snap. And while Denver isn't an elite team, they are one with a winning record that competes in nearly every game.
