The problem is that the 49er offense lack imagination. They line up and say "we are coming straight at you, try to stop us," and in this league, any team can stop another when it is that obvious.

For the QB, they have to have receivers that are fast, agile and who can read a defense consistently and get open. The 49er receivers are good blockers first and pass receivers second. With the exception of VD, NONE of them could start in Green Bay or Indy or Dallas any of the good passing teams in the NFL. That leaves the QB with pretty limited options even before you look at the simplistic offense Singletary prefers.

People want to blame the QB, but I also blame Jimmy Raye and Singletary. I'm tired of hearing about execution. The play-calling is too predictable and lacks creativity. It reminds me of that infamous Tampa Bay Buccaneers quote: "What do you think of your team's execution?" John McKay: "I'm in favor of it." Well, that's how I feel sometimes about Jimmy Raye! I'm beginning to lose faith in Mike Singletary. His stubborn views on offense may end up being his downfall. I don't think his views on offense will work in today's NFL. This has clearly become a passing league. Singletary needs to change or it may cost him his job.

I'm not sure he has the tools to convert to a passing game even if he reaches that conclusion.

As I said above, the 49er receivers are better blockers than pass receivers. Crabtree has the most potential but he doesn't have the speed to be a legit #1 in this league. I give the 49ers credit for recognizing the need in signing Ginn but he is just a cast off who has never been the threat this team needs.

Crabtree has demonstrated he didn't do the work needed in the off-season to be a reliable receiver. Morgan COULD be a decent #2, maybe, but he needs a speed guy to take the lid off for him to work underneath. Right now, Morgan is probably more valuable to the team than Crabtree but that only exposes the nature of the talent on this team...and then we get to play design...

The personnel I'm more concerned about when it comes to the passing game is the Oline, not the receivers. If the Oline can hold it will allow receivers to get open, but as we saw during the 2nd half, our Oline is susceptible to pressure and blitz's.
when the play calling is as predictable as run, run, pass, punt. Then yes, the system is putting strain on the QB. It is harder to convert on 3rd down when the defense already knows you have to pass to make up for the two failed runs right up the gut on the previous two plays.
You see these young offensive minds around the league and the 49ers go back to the 80's to pick their man. IMO nobody wanted the job and the question becomes Why?
I think playcalling is A problem but it's not THE problem. The problem is and has always been lack of execution. I don't care whether it's Alex, the o line, or WRs. We can never all just be on the same page.

Last week they all sucked. Last year Alex was on fire in Seattle only to have wrs/te drop the ball in the endzone.

If Alex made better throws last week we'd be 1-0...if our guys caught the ball last year we'd have been 9-7 or better. The point is: EXECUTION.

Everything else makes small differences but ultimately the player have to do their part.

Nobody wanted the job because nobody wanted to go with Singletary's "smash mouth" style of offense. Sorry but for a team that is supposed to be a "smash mouth" running team, we suck at the run. Gore averaged what 2.2 yards per run against Seattle?

Failing to execute puts our TEAM in a bind. I hold every player responsible for this 1. Raye may indeed suck, but we gotta try to make it work.

But at the same time Jimmy Raye has to be held responsible. Like I said, Raye's play-calling is predictable and lacks creativity. Jimmy Raye has no feel for the game and doesn't know what "keep the defense guessing" means. Now, we all see why he was never with one team for more than 3 seasons throughout his coaching career.

Quote:
Aside from the 49ers, Raye’s has held the post of offensive coordinator for several teams, including the Los Angeles Rams (1983-84, 1991), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1985-86), New England Patriots (1990), Kansas City Chiefs (1998-2000), Washington Redskins (2001) and Oakland Raiders (2004-05).

This is very true......and what I'm about to write here will probably not sit well with a lot of zoners........but here goes...

Alex certainly did not make the throws when he needed to last Sunday. I think we can all agree on that.

However, when the plays are coming in late (sometimes too late to even call the play or even HEAR the play) then that adds a lot more pressure to an already pressure packed situation.

I'm merely saying that most QBs in the NFL are HELPED by their OCs, not hurt.

When Alex has to deal with that nonsense, get everyone on the same page and then execute.....on the road in an extremely loud environment....well, you all saw what happened....he got overwhelmed....and I think understandably to some degree.

I'm not making excuses for Alex. I want to make that clear. All I'm saying is that OC and coaching staff did him a disservice last week and didn't allow him to relax and actually play the game. They made his job far more difficult, not less. Therefore, I don't think he can be judged fairly on that one game.

I live up in Seattle now and the local broadcasters were saying that these issues date back to last season and that Alex pleaded with the coaching staff in the offseason to address them.....and his pleas fell on deaf ears. I know Alex denies that now but I'm not buying it. I think he said what he said so the team wouldn't completely fall apart before they even play their second game.

Just trying to add a little perspective....

That is part of it. The other part is that the receivers, including Vernon Davis, must read the blitz and adjust their routes so Alex can get them the ball before the pressure gets to him. I didn't see receivers who were capable of doing that last year, and they certainly were not doing it on Sunday.
