The Use of the Pump Fake

I know this has been mentioned as one of the many critisicisms of Alex Smith. A QB can institute the pump fake into every play if he wants to and some damn near,do (Big Ben, Farve). However you run the risk of loosing the ball, taking a sack and if you do it all the time the defense starts to catch on. Some young QBs who are developing this skill are Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco. There are also times when the play you are running actually calls for the pump fake (See the two plays where Hasselback burnt our CBs last week) and it works particularly well when facing an aggressive defense. I think Alex and the entire offene need to work on this in practice. They also need to work on coming back to the ball and getting open when plays break down. Many teams from now on are going to bring the pressure and force Alex to react. It would be nice if a play could call for a pump fake forcing the CBs to make a decision early and then allowing the recievers to make a move. Once we can get defenses to sit back a little bit it will greatly improve our run game. [/center]

in all honesty i dont think he has the time to pumpfake maybe later this season but as of the past and especially against seattle i dont think he has had the time to pumpfake

whether its alex or shaun this topic has been brought up before. (I'm not saying this should be locked) i'm just saying its been a problem for niner QBs lately

just cause our cbs are aggressive and bite (suck?)

doesnt mean opposing dbs will

the pump fake doesnt work with our team, nobody is going to bite on an alex smith pump fake.

Actually, Nate Davis dose this pretty well.

It seems so simple. Just pump it to fame the defense. It's a wonder why every qb doesn't just do it.

I was thinking this too. But the biggest problem is that Smith is not a natural playmaker. If things don't happen exactly as planned, he rolls right and throws out of bounds. Or makes a dumb throw. When is the last time you saw him escape a defender barrelling down on him? He has ZERO moves and never outruns anyone, despite his supposed speed. The guy sucks, I don't know how else to put it. NOT A PLAYMAKER. People make plays off of him. He is the doof with apparent physical advantages that you always beat growing up because he didn't really have instincts. Plus he can't throw accurately, which is kinda important.

He had very little time that whole game but just obliterated us with his quick decision making.
