We are great run stoppers at a time when champions are kings of passing!

Good teams have dominant QB's that can throw the ball, if you can't bring the heat (pass rush) you will lose to elite teams.

We also can't throw the ball on offense, which makes it almost impossible to run the ball (stacking of the box).

So, what can we do to change all of this (THIS YEAR) without firing everybody?

nice topic here, hopefully it doesn't get raped my homerism.

for me, what we did against the ELITE passing attack of the colts last year, is something that we need to start doing a bit more often in ALL our games this year. the defensive game planning was nearly perfect in that game. but i guess we really have to approach each opponent differently-with that same "theme" as we did against the colts. i just hope that we realize our pass rush is not as good as we thought and that we will need to get a bit more creative with how we bring pressure and how we could disguise it-if at all.

as for our passing game, we need to stop being so predictable. i know a lot of people said that already, but it is the truth. come out and throw deep sooner rather than later. get a rhythm going and THEN sprinkle in the runs. i know it sounds over simplified, but KEEP THE DEFENSE HONEST.

Our front 7 is the strength of the defense. We don't have to shut down the run at expense of the pass. Simply stated, the secondary needs to play better. If they do, we can stop both. I don't think we use many run blitzes because of our front seven, but I may be wrong. Also, I think bringing the heat may be the best solution against an elite QB. We don't have a dominant pass rusher. The last thing we want to do is give an elite QB a lot of time to throw. They will find someone.

As far as the offense goes, we need to have a balanced attack... badly. Not sure if we can do much right now, except hope for better execution and QB play.

Totally agree. It's not like all our eggs are into stopping the run. We can stop the run with a base defense.

Is Brooks going to play Monday night?
i don't see much difference in how our D is built when compared with Baltimore, Green Bay, NYJ, etc. They have some more talented players, for sure, but the foundation of each is the front 7. Our problem is that we do need a real standout in the secondary, which all of those teams have, and we need to generate a better passrush. Other than that, though, I don't see our defense being "behind-the-times" as the offense is "behind-the-times."

I don' t think they have decided on Brooks yet. Lets hope so. Having a pass rush without blitzing changes everything.
Stopping the run w/o a passrush is a BS stat.

Teams will just pass on us non-stop and our run totals for the game will look good but won't mean anything.

Here are all of SEA 3rd and shorts (5 yards or less) we didn't stop a single running play from getting a first down

(1) 3rd and 4 at SF 47 M.Hasselbeck pass short right to D.Branch to SF 44 for 3 yards (P.Willis).
(2) 3rd and 4 at SEA 42 (Shotgun) M.Hasselbeck pass incomplete short left to D.Branch. PENALTY on SF-N.Clements, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at SEA 42 - No Play.
(3) 3rd and 3 at SF 3 (Shotgun) M.Hasselbeck pass short left to D.Branch for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
(4) 3rd and 2 at SEA 27 (Shotgun) M.Hasselbeck pass short left to M.Williams to SEA 32 for 5 yards (P.Willis).
(5) 3rd and 2 at SEA 40 M.Hasselbeck pass short right to B.Obomanu to SEA 46 for 6 yards (N.Clements).
(6) 3rd and 1 at SEA 35 J.Forsett right tackle to SF 33 for 32 yards (D.Goldson).
(7) 3rd and 4 at SF 27 J.Forsett up the middle to SF 22 for 5 yards (M.Lawson).

7 plays
5 passes (no runs until 4th quarter). 4/5 converted for 1st down (1 due to penalty)
2 runs. 2/2 converted for 1st down

The modern NFL is passing. All the rules favor passing and we can't do a thing to stop it
I could've sworn Nate Clements intercepted the first play of the 2010 fu*king season.

The bold is NOT true. We stop ourselves all the time by running the wrong damn routes or not accurately throwing a pass that a Peewee league player can make.

Ok, now if the front 7 is the strength of the team why would we need a stud revis island type of player in the secondary? Look at how much time the Seahawks had to throw the ball! How many sacks did we get? Not to mention you can take 2 players out of that front 7 simply by putting two more WR's on the field!

The Ravens, Jets, and Steelers get after the QB! We seem to only get after the RB!
