A better pass rush and a new HC would probably be a good start.

I have not read one correct response. The secondary is not our problem... it's the sissy-soft zone scheme implemented.
7-10 yard CB cushions killed us all year. These cushions allow opposing QBs to carve us up underneath. Having our CBs play off-coverage keeps focus off of shadowing their man... allows for so many screen successes... allows QBs to get the ball out before any real chance of QB pressures.
Clements did not just forget how to play CB, folks. We signed a physical, in-your-face CB for big money, and then used him as a zone CB in off-coverage. That's just stupidity. Manusky sucks... and our players are made to look pathetic under his scheme.

You nailed it my friend, we sign man coverage corners then put them in a soft zone, maybe if we get a coach that understands the strengths of our players, we would get better play.

Mm, I tend to agree with you... Arguably, our biggest problem over the past decade, along with talent, has been scheming and usage of whatever talent we have had. Which game was it now a couple of weeks ago...? It was a win. Anyway, I remember listening to the radio broadcast and the broadcasters being impressed with how physical we were being with the opponents WRs. It just makes me sick when we play off people and give them slants, outs, crossing patterns all bloody day... Still, our front seven DOES get a reasonable amount of pressure. Last year, anyway, we were among the league-leaders in sacks. Justin gets constant pressure and Franklin, McDonald seem to penetrate every now and then. I WOULD like to see have a player back there who opposing teams and QBs have to gameplan for a la Ed Reed / Polamalu. Whenever we play, it's like we have to COVER UP for our safeties rather than trust in them. We need someone back there to create turnovers and knock people OUT.

Gonna need some new bodies back there.
Here is how I see it breaking down:
Spencer- has been a rock. He's a keeper.
Clements- A cap casualty, unless he restructures his contract. The Niners are simply not going to pay that much to the number 2 CB on the roster.
Goldson- Best suited as a strong safety in the NFL. Simply does not possess the ball-hawk skills to be a starter at FS in the NFL.
Smith- A valuable reserve in the NFL, but not a starter.
Mays- A bad draft choice. He is best suited at SS, but his coverage skills, as noted by many scouts prior to the draft, is not good enough to make an impact in the NFL.
So, what do we have? One starting CB, one competition by committee at SS, and a major hole at the second CB position and FS.

This, one great pass rusher can help every one in the secondary all by himself.

I would say bring in new talent via draft/FA .... Or both... I would like to see M. Lewis come over from CIncy and bring J. Joseph with him and be our D coordinator...
Love to see
LCB: J. Joseph (Plays in a tough division, tested regularly and holds up..)
RCB: S. Spencer ( I believe he is a solid #2)
FS: N. Clements (I would hope he would restructure, and quit jumping so many routes, and have some discipline)
SS: D. Whitner from bills (I was hoping we would trade for him last yr..)
But being a realist i believe that our new D coordinator should open up all the secondary spots to the best ball player..Open competition.. All spots

Good point. My Answer in the poll was "new personnel" and a bringing in a new pass rusher will work quite well with a few new dbs. They need someone on the left side basically. But ya Clements was overpriced and overrated when the 49ers signed him unfortunately.

are you kidding me? Do you think an observation that obvious (7-10 yard CB cushions) would fly over manuskys' head. Of course not. Manusky is no rookie coach. He has the CB's giving cushions for a reason.
the reason is this: Our Cb's suck. plain and simple. they're just average at best
Do you wanna see Clements or Spencer in man coverage with Greg
Jennings(122 rec yards, wk 13)????
or How About Roddy White (104 rec yards, wk 4)????
or maybe Vincent Jackson (112 rec yards, wk 15)????
Think about it...If our CB's gave up ridiculous amounts of yards to these receivers with 10 yard cushions, how much more yards do you think they'll surrender with man/bump-n-run coverage?????
If our SLOW-AS-HELL CB's ever missed a jam at the line of scrimmage than its a GURANTEED six points for the other team
manusky is just doin the best with the "cards" he has. We need to draft a better secondary. period.
