GAME & PLAYER ANALYSIS/PRE SEASON THOUGHTS/PRACTICE SQUAD

General Notes: The offensive line even the 2nd and 3rd stingers all look pretty good (except maybe wallace). We continue to run the ball well and block well with these guys. Boone has had a great pre season and has done better than Sims (hasn't had much time) in my opinion. Brian De La Puente looks good, Wragge has looked good, Snyder looks better at guard then he ever did at tackle, etc. We gave up one sack tonight and 2 in 3 games but thats better than probably a 2-3 average per game last year. We had 5 sacks on defense and got pressure all night long. Problem is many times we where near the QB and didn't read the screens. We gave up a couple big plays because we got to the QB and left the RB open with a lot of space in front of him. We did however read it well a few times and had a couple plays where we where right on it. I think we burned another two timeouts before the snap. Makes about 5-6 in two games. Again, we need to save these for when we actually need them. What if we have to stop a team at the end of the game to try and get the ball back and we have wasted all of our time outs? It eliminates any show we would have. Whatever it is it has to get fixed... and it's happened with Alex, David and Nate. I don't know about you guys but I am loving how aggressive Manusky has been. It seems like we are blitzing every 3 plays if not more. We have been getting a lot of pressure on the QB but the one thing that worries me is the screens. Like I mentioned above it could be 3rd and 20 and you are an inch from the QB and he just gets it off and nobody is around and it's a first down. Plus we have to get there if we blitz and at least get our hands up. We have had a bunch of batted balls already. The special teams has been a roller coaster ride this preseason. Although for the most part it looks good. Kick returns on offense and defense are being returned to about the 20-25 which is normal. We have hit all but 1 of our field goals. Punt coverage has been good except for tonight's one play. We have had a punt returned td in our own right. Bottom line though we look much better on punt returns this year. We have two potential star returners and are probably averaging 15-20 yards per return (even without the 83 yarder) between the two. Much better than the 2-4 we averaged last year with about 5 fumbles and the TDs/games they cost us. Didn't capitalize early and got stuffed on a 4th and 1 and also the Caulcrick fumble at like the 15 yard line. We left about 10-21 points on the field tonight. We really slowed down for about a quarter and a half once Nate took over. The defense started to look bad... offense wasn't doing much.... Nate struggled and I know one of the ints wasn't his fault and the other Jurovich could have had. He was 11/22 but we had about 3-5 drops there. Still, Davis continues to move laterally instead of forward. He's not doing bad but he's not doing what he is capable of either. Karl Paymah was probably the worst negative out of this game besides the punt return for a td. He gave up like 5 plus catches. He's not getting beat that bad and he's around to make the tackle but still he was giving up receptions left and right. He was doing decent in the pre season up until this game but no I am wondering if we should cut him and keep James even though he's been hurt all pre season (except for like a half). We had 6 penalties for 84 yards although two of them where against Wallace for 30 yards. Still we have to get them down. We have had 8 for 73, 9 for 92, 10 for 82 and the 6 for 84 tonight. That's way took many and way too many yards given up. We averaged 6 per game last year and are at about 9 so far. Also, a lot of false starts on offense and defense from the previous games but none tonight so that was good. Player Notes: Navorro Bowman played probably the best tonight. He had 7 tackles, 1 sack and a forced fumble. He has been playing outstanding these few pre season games and could take over for Spikes next year. He is quick, makes plays, can blitz and get to the qb and tackles well (open field as well). We have blitzed him a ton. Manny Lawson probably had the second best game with 3 tackles and an INT returned for 26 yards. He was in the backfield making stops as well. He did kind of look slow on the INT though. Taylor Mays had an interception in the end zone and took a pretty good shot but held onto the ball. Had 3 tackles in the game... looks to be getting better in coverage. Ricky Jean-Francois played some nose tackle and a lot of defensive end tonight. Had one ball deflected and don't see any tackles for him tonight but he got in the backfield a few times. Nate Byham who has surprised by showing his receiving skills all pre season long all of a sudden got a case of the drops this game. I think he had 3 of them but he did make up for it a bit with 3 catches for 30 yards and at least 1 first down grab that I can think of. He could be a real weapon this season on 3rd downs. Fake a block and go out short and get us first downs. That being said I doubt he gets many looks with Davis and Walker (who is playing better). Oh, and someone tell Dennis he is from Pitt not Penn State. Anthony Dixon is getting better each game. His pass blocking has gotten much better since the first game. He seems like his vision is getting better. His cuts seem quicker... could be that he is getting into better shape. I doubt he gets that touchdown when he first got here. He has had 74 carries this pre season which is by far the most in the league and also lead the league in rushing with 300 and 3 tds. Phillip Adams struggled a bit tonight. Besides the big pass I seen him get beat at least one more time, maybe twice. Still in limited action he is showing us what a steal he was. The highlight of the pre season for him was his 83 yard punt return for a TD. He continues to do well on punt returns averaging 30.6 yards per return. Without the 83 yarder he still is averaging 17.5 per return which is a little bit better than our average last year of what 1.9. He's has to watch the fumbles as well. I know he has only had one and it was recovered by us but it doesn't matter if you return it 50 yards if the other team gets the ball back. Tramaine Brock looked pretty good tonight. Seen him break up one pass tonight and then had the int at the end. I know he was trying to show what he can do but he needs to take a knee to end the game. He might be a practice squad guy. Jehuu Caulrick ran well tonight and had the one td catch but did have a fumble. I think he made a case for practice squad although it will be tough to put 2 fullbacks on there. Miller hasn't got a whole lot of time blocking but he has been doing well on special teams and racking up tackles. Will Tukuafu had 4 tackles and a big sack. I've been selling this guy since he got here but I doubt there is room for him on the roster. He should make the practice squad. If teams are smart they will be looking at our practice squad because we will have talent on it. Curtis Taylor I think had a forced fumble but I remember one bad play but can't remember what it was about. Don't think he's done enough to get a roster spot. Hopefully Brock isn't mad at him for kind of forcing him to get down at the end. I know it's pre season but I think the coaches would be more impressed with him taking a knee then risking giving them the ball back. Guys I'd like to put on the PS but not sure if eligible: Brian De La Puenta - Continues to block well, can play G/C... someone should sign him Bruce Davis - 1.5 sacks tonight, 5 tackles, has played well but unfortunately with our depth has no shot at the roster. Someone should pick him up Curtis Taylor - The stats say he was on our roster for 7 games which is the maximum you can be on a roster for and not be practice squad eligible. Potential Practice Squad Guys: Tramaine Brock, Jehuu Caulcrick, Will Tukuafa - See above comments Derek Walker - Had 7 tackles tonight, one in the backfield from what I can remember. He has played well this pre season, hopefully he gets a shot but I don't think the team would choose him over Mitchell. Khaliff Mitchell - Has played alright this pre season but I think they like him. Kevin Jurovich had a 29 yard catch late in the game that helped set up the last TD. He has been doing decent on kick returns with a 48 yarder last week and did alright tonight. Mike Balogun - Didn't do much tonight. Had three tackles, one I think was on special teams. However, he has had an int and played decent in the other games Keaton Kristick - He's had 10 tackles in 3 games. Not too bad but not hasn't done a whole lot. Gone: Cody Wallace had two 15 yard penalties and is probably 4th on the center depth chart and doesn't play guard like the rest of the guys so he is out. Jason Hill got poked in the eye and ended any shot he had at showing something this game. Didn't help that Zeigler had one catch for 26 yards. Side Notes: We ended up being the only team to go undefeated in the pre season. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. We gave up 65 points which is 8th best and had 97 points which is also 8th best. Overall, it's been a great pre season. We have seen a lot of guys shine and a few not so much. Overall this draft class looks like it could be unbelievable. We have really progressed but we still have a lot of work to do. Best pre season from players who aren't starters/backups last year: Anthony Dixon, Navorro Bowman, Ricky Jean Francois, Diyral Briggs, Travis LaBoy, Phillip Adams, Dominique Zeigler, Nate Byham, Mike Iupati, David Baas, Alex Boone, a few others... it may seem like a lot but it's been that good of a pre season Special nomination for Anthony Davis who probably improved the most out of any player

Dam......... What happend to Jason Hill? Whatever it is It's too bad, I had high hopes for him. If he gets cut hopefully he dose good with another team. (exept against us)

Same here.... he had only 1 catch in the pre season. They haven't given him much time and the coaches like Zeigler better. He has 9 receptions for 106 yards. I wish Hill would have gotten a chance but he must have done something to get on the coaches bad side.

As for tonight if you didn't see the game he was going on a slant and got poked in the eye when the defender was pressing him. It was with 9 minutes left in the 2nd quarter and he didn't catch a pass before that. I think he needs a change of scenary.

Net points was 32 behind only Min 34 and Bal 33 which is a good sign

really pleased with our depth at all positions minus CB, but that should get fixed within the coming year
