CHECK THE END OF PAGE 2.... I ADDED SOME NOTES FROM THE SECOND HALF. I DIDN'T BREAK IT DOWN.... JUST WATCHED AND HAD A FEW THINGS I REMEMBERED. ***Notes on the game, the pre-season so far, what are my concerns for the season and some player evaluations for this game/pre season If there is something in here I didn't hit on and you have a question just ask and I will try to answer it. I didn't go over the 2nd half so I can't say much right now about the 2nd/3rd stringers. Although, there probably won't be much because our starters/backups played most of the game. -Looks like Spencer, Crabtree, Vernon Davis, are the only ones that didn’t play besides Franklin (as far as starters go) -We have been getting way too many false starts. Iupati and Davis need to work on it especially. Also, too many of them on defense as well (Lawson). We can't be jumping the gun and giving free first downs/yardage. -I'm concerned with the way we have been starting games. I know are offense has been doing better recently but we have a history of starting out slow. Especially on those 10AM road games. We tend to come out slow and then settle down and pick it up eventually. We can't be having false starts (Off&Def) to start the games. We also can't come out conservative. If we come out in Seattle and run 3 straight plays for a yard a piece the Seattle fans will be going crazy and it will probably set the tone for the hole game. If we play our game from the start we can beat anybody. A related note we can't be eating up time outs left and right. The sidelines has to get the play in quicker and if the head sets are going out then Smith has to call a play and move on. We will need these timeouts in the regular season. -The offensive line is looking pretty good. Baas has been doing well at center and have only seen one high snap so far. He's doing a great job in pass protection and a good job in run blocking. Iupati seems to be doing better in the holds department. He is a great run blocker and a good pass blocker so far. I mentioned last week how he was helping other guys with their blocks and not watching his gap (where someone came through and got to the QB). This week I saw him on one play help Baas for a nanosecond and then back off and wait in his gap. Not sure how the coaches say to block if you don't see anybody in your hole... if they want you to help out or just wait in case someone comes. Either way I hope that was a change for the better. Davis seems much improved. He was getting beat dang near every play against the Colts and not seems to be getting to the outside much quicker and not letting people get by him. Staley looks solid and Rachal has looked better than last year but not great. -It looked like Haralson had Reece on that 34 yard wheel route catch. He dropped into coverage and isn't quick enough to cover a wr, rb, te and I guess not even a FB. Lewis came over and made the tackle with Haralson jogging way up field. He hasn't created much if any pass rush in this pre season. He does a good job against the run but he's a liability in coverage and hasn't gotten the type of pressure we wanted since resigning with us. It's obvious our 3 weekness going into this season are Lewis 1, Haralson 2 and Soap 3. They aren't bad players and most defenses would love to have them but if we want to be elite these guys need to step it up or they should get replaced by mid season. (Lewis and Haralson sooner). Briggs didn't do much this game but has shown a lot of promise. That being said I'd probably be more comfortable with the veteran LaBoy eventually (if 98 doesn't step it up)coming in on pass downs for Haralson. Lewis could soon be replaced by Mays real soon if he keeps giving up big plays (especially 3rd down) because although he can tackle and is good against the run is a liability in coverage. Maybe we see Mays start to come in on passing downs and eventually full time. As for Soap, I expect McDonald to compete all year with him and hopefully come in on passing downs. Soap is solid against the run but has never had more than 1.5 sacks in a season. - We haven't thrown an INT or turned the ball over in two games. We have also only given up 1 sack in the past two games. Problem is the defense had 4 turnovers in the first game and 0 in the past two. I figured not playing against Painter the next two games would be different but still. -It was nice to see Morgan get in the action and get a TD. Also, Zeigler continues to impress with 5 catches for 47 yards. He is probably up to #4 on the depth chart if not edging in on 3. I'm surprised... and Hill is basically done. Ginn has looked willing to block, Walker again looked great. We will have a pretty solid receiving core. We haven't seen much of Davis with the injury but Walker and Byham are playing well. Byham had 1 catch for 6 yards and another bounce off his face mask but has caught the ball well and blocked well. He can also get us an extra roster space with him playing backup FB. I expected Byham to be another Pascoe but he is doing much better and am shocked with how good he has looked catching the ball. -I'm a little worried going into the year that CBs will be our weakness. Phillip Adams has looked great in two games which he has 6 tackles and 3 pass def (I would have figured more like 5). Not to mention his 83 yard return for a TD and a couple other nice returns. He looks better in one game than we had all last season. I feel confident going in with Ginn Jr., Adams and Williams on KR/PR duties. Our averages should be up and hopefully we see a few TDs. Back to the corners... Brown hasn't been that good in the pre season. Paymah has looked average and James was hurt. I'm almost thinking we should try to get a space for James on the roster because I think we will need all the CBs we can get. I'm not sure what Paymah, Adams, James can offer this season. I'd like to upgrade the spot for next year. We might also cut Clements after the season to save some money for next FA where we have 14 FAs including 7 starters. Then again he could rework his contract because these next few seasons he starts to make a boatload. Like 13 million per... - Alex Smith has looked good these past two games. He has moved great in the pocket, his arm is pretty good and his accuracy is getting better. He's got all the tools and the only thing I could see holding him back this year is our playbook. If we let him Alex can help this team win ball games. He hasn't thrown an int that was his fault (walker's tip) in the pre season and has. He is 21/37 (56.7%) for 238 yards and a TD. Not the best stats but we have been doing a lot of running. Dixon leads the entire NFL in rushing yards. -We did a ton of rotating back and forth with the defensive line. Hopefully we do that in the regular season to keep guys fresh. Smith won't come out but him and Evans went back and forth, McDonald and Soap constantly, RJF even came out and a few plays in the first half we had Soap/McDonald as NT. One play we had 4 DL and no NT. This group is solid but it could be spectacular with a bunch of sacks from LDE (Soap/McDonald). -Linebackers.. didn't hear much out of Briggs and Bruce Davis but Briggs still makes the roster. LaBoy looked great again... would have had 2 sacks but on his first play in got held and it wasn't called. Willis looks like he will be on pace for defensive player of the year once the season starts. Lawson hasn't done much neither has Haralson for pass rush. Lawson is doing well in run defense (7 tackles)... I think Haralson has only one tackle. -Overall the pass offense has been better but still needs work. It's pre season so I didn't expect us to open it up. Rush offense is in the top of the league. We are 3rd in total defense, 5th in rush defense and 7th in pass defense. Not that it means much but hopefully that's an indication of things to come. Justin smith gets pressure and has hand on Campbell but he gets rid of it to bush for… RJF takes on two guys, doesn’t penetrate… releases and heads to runner…. Haralson runs out of play… easily pushed down…Lawson drops in coverage… willis in on tackle 1-10-OAK 29 (13:32) 8-J.Campbell pass deep middle to 85-D.Heyward-Bey to SF 49 for 22 yards (25-T.Brown; 32-M.Lewis). Haralson gets nowhere on LT…. smith not much more…RJF no push…. Haralson fakes rush for microsecond and drops back on reece…. It wasn’t lewis who had another man covered… he came and made the tackle though 1-10-SF 15 (12:10) 29-M.Bush right tackle to SF 14 for 1 yard (99-M.Lawson). soap fights off blocker and gets in on tackle, Lawson drops and comes up for tackle, rjf also pushed his guy backwards and got in there as well 2-9-SF 14 (11:33) 8-J.Campbell pass short left to 85-D.Heyward-Bey to SF 7 for 7 yards (38-D.Goldson). quick pass so even though smith was pushing his guy backwards he had no chance, nobody else got a push, RJF just engages for a sec and releases after pass, Lawson drops into coverage… brown on coverage and misses a tackle as well… goldson comes in and makes it…. 2nd pass to DHB that Brown gave up 3-2-SF 7 (10:51) 29-M.Bush up the middle to SF 7 for no gain (51-T.Spikes, 52-P.Willis). Staley excellent job, iupati excellent, baas helps iupati but he doesn’t need it, rachal and davis great job, gore…short throw to morgan for first down 1-10-SF 31 (7:31) 21-F.Gore up the middle to OAK 20 for 49 yards (33-T.Branch). morgan motions and comes around for fake reverse and the hand off goes to gore… Iupati excellent job sealing off… gets two blocks, staley excellent, Norris makes the play along with iupati by sealing off the other side of the whole, ginn jr runs with gore and does a nice job of turning around and blocking a much bigger man, staley hustles down there as well, huff threw a shoulder at gore and gore bounces 1-10-OAK 20 (6:53) 21-F.Gore up the middle to OAK 11 for 9 yards (55-R.McClain). Iupati excellent helps baas and then moves on and gets another block… second play in round getting two guys, staley seals off his guy, davis pulls and helps make the play by making sure the hole is open… davis quick on the pulls… 2-1-OAK 11 (6:18) 11-A.Smith FUMBLES (Aborted) at OAK 16, recovered by SF-21-F.Gore at OAK 14. 21-F.Gore to OAK 14 for no gain (24-M.Huff). Gore drops the pitch, 8 in box, 6 on line, gin does his job blocking, staley does his, not sure if play would have worked anyways… despite the good blocking huff was up there pretty quick in the gap that gore would have ran in Timeout #1 by SF at 05:40. 3-4-OAK 14 (5:40) (Shotgun) PENALTY on SF-46-Del.Walker, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at OAK 14 - No Play. 3-9-OAK 19 (5:40) (Shotgun) 11-A.Smith pass incomplete short right to 46-Del.Walker. high snap by baas, not sure if iupati and staley on same page, both block one guy and another goes right by on blitz…. Lawson and soap blocked out of the play, RJF kind of gets pushed back but fights off block and makes the tackle, 2-8-OAK 29 (4:51) 20-D.McFadden left guard to OAK 28 for -1 yards (52-P.Willis). Lawson drops back in coverage, RJF gets drove back, smith gets blocked off, Haralson as well, willis comes up in smith’s gap and makes the tackle in the backfield 3-9-OAK 28 (4:07) (Shotgun) 8-J.Campbell pass incomplete short middle to 83-B.Myers. Haralson switches from 3 point to 2 point stance a couple of times and drops into coverage, not sure where he was dropping too though… looks like he went to drop out into the flats near our CB… meanwhile the guy he was lined up across from goes straight out and would have had a first down catch but dropped it. Don’t know if Haralson was suppose to drop into the flats or why he left the TE run free. Paymah comes on CB blitz and Lewis blitzes as well, mcdonald is in, willis drops into coverage, not sure I like that call because there where two guys open, don’t know who was suppose to cover miller… maybe willis who kind of just dropped back in the middle of the field inbetween the two TEs who where both open 4-9-OAK 28 (4:02) 9-S.Lechler punts 51 yards to SF 21, Center-59-J.Condo. 35-P.Adams to SF 32 for 11 yards (54-S.Williams; 59-J.Condo). Excellent pass blocking all around, not a bad pass by smith but no branch was right there… one thing I noticed tonight is the raiders secondary is pretty good in coverage 2-10-SF 32 (3:43) 33-A.Dixon left end to SF 30 for -2 yards (77-M.Shaughnessy). / here is where staley gets hurt… Dixon kind of falls on the back of his leg…. Walker and bynam lined up next to staley, he pulls around them and is the lead blocker… byham is pushed back majorly and his guy makes the play, walker also gets pushed back and his guy was back there as well 3-12-SF 30 (2:59) (Shotgun) 11-A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to 17-D.Zeigler (24-M.Huff). PENALTY on SF-84-J.Morgan, Illegal Block Above the Waist, 10 yards, enforced at OAK 28. good protection, gave smith time to throw quickly to walker on a slant, not sure why the raiders had wimbley on walker at wr… that’s just asking to get beat.. smith audibled at the line, maybe he seen it…maybe not but the important thing was he eventually recognized the mismatch, good pass, walker makes wimbley miss on a jump at the heel. Morgan tries to help out by blocking but it’s a block in the back and 10 yards off the end of the run. I can see why those block in the backs happen… the guys are just trying to help out and it’s hard for them to say hey I can’t see the front of the guy let me just lay off. Heck, I bet coaches would be pissed if they didn’t try. Rachal great push, davis holds his own, baas gets a good push, sims hold his own, iupati chips one player moves to second level and looks for someone to hit… nice hole with nice blocking all around 2-1-OAK 16 (13:59) 44-M.Norris up the middle to OAK 16 for no gain (Team). PENALTY on OAK-21-N.Asomugha, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at OAK 16 - No Play. luckly we got bailed out on the pass interference… I doubt ginn catches it on scrabble if he doesn’t get held back by 21…. I think he was pushing against him and I don’t think it was a penalty because 21 was within the 5 yard area… we got lucky… no reason we should have failed on 3 straight 1 yard to go 1-10-OAK 11 (12:20) 33-A.Dixon right end to OAK 11 for no gain (55-R.McClain). it’s hard to say it was bad blocking but 8 in the box, branch came up real quick… it’s hard to block 8-10 guys with 6-7 guys…. 2-10-OAK 11 (11:36) 11-A.Smith pass incomplete short right to 82-N.Byham (26-S.Routt). excellent pass blocking all around but wasted with byham just running a few yards out in the flats… didn’t like the route, smith had time, not sure if anyone else was open but Dixon a couple yards up the middle would have been better… 3-10-OAK 11 (11:31) (Shotgun) 11-A.Smith pass incomplete short middle to 82-N.Byham. great pass blocking all around again…. Paymah and Briggs on tackle… Dixon out there as well 1-10-OAK 26 (11:15) 8-J.Campbell sacked at OAK 15 for -11 yards (52-P.Willis). Looks like the first play that Laboy is in…beats his guy and would have had a sack but was held badly… not called so there where a few calls our way and a couple there way throughout the game, willis comes up the middle again and gets the sack… funny how many times people let willis come right up the middle untouched (not just this game), looks like soap, evans and RJF out there…evans is the only guy who got through… he jumps on willis and campbell 2-21-OAK 15 (10:49) 8-J.Campbell pass short right to 45-M.Reece to OAK 26 for 11 yards (52-P.Willis). Laboy in coverage, evans beat his guy and might have gotten held… does a nice job hustling to the play and jumps on the pile at the end… RJF no push on 2 guys, soap gets through but Campbell dumps it off just as he gets there...probably should have read screen though when the guy let him through…I want to say it was Haralson who beat his man and got held… but again was too late… tough to read screen when your guy doesn’t let you through… if he does chances are you should back off and play the screen. 3-10-OAK 26 (10:04) (Shotgun) 8-J.Campbell pass incomplete short right to 18-L.Murphy. mcdonald back in… smith… and maybe laboy, laboy gets pushed passed qb, mcdonald doesn’t get any push, neither does smith…. Haralson drops into coverage… they had mcdonald standing up for a second… that’s the thing with the 3-4 you can have anybody stand up… get down stand up drop back into coverage, blitz, etc…. you can hide your rushers, pass was behind Murphy (only 2 yards downfield on cross) but no way he gets first down with 3 9ers waiting for him 4-10-OAK 26 (9:59) 9-S.Lechler punts 57 yards to SF 17, Center-59-J.Condo. 35-P.Adams for 83 yards, TOUCHDOWN 49ers might have had a couple questionable blocks… not really block in the back but where close and could have been called if they where ticky tacky…. One dive and a miss and other than that there was a hole and with about 3 raiders on each side stretched out and adams flew through it. Hats off to you for writing all of that. And hats off to me for reading all of it. Anyhow, I couldn't find anything I disagreed with. And I think you're right, we'll definitely be drafting new talent to the secondary come next April. But will we have a season in the following Fall? Who cares, I don't want to think about that now.

As for Haralson, he doesn't even look like he belongs on the team right now. When I've heard him interviewed, I've really liked the things he has said, but he just isn't showing us what we need to see on the field.

Hopefully the regular season brings out the best in these guys. I know the defense didn't play their best game this past Saturday.

And Kilgore.... I don't think I would count Haralson out. For the most part his job is to keep the runs inside. He does a good job of that but occasionally a faster RB will beat him to the outside. And yes we will have to live with the coverage but we take the good with the bad. If he can get 5 sacks I could probably live with him. Otherwise if he struggles I'd be all for him and LaBoy splitting time. LaBoy starts by coming in on 3rd downs see how it works and go from there. Don't think Briggs is ready to be splitting time yet but by next year he could possibly be a starter.

Don't give people more credit than they deserve. MadDog was certain Baas had no shot at Heitmann's job and insulted those who thought otherwise. Not saying he is always right but I am more so looking at the amount of work he puts into the draft. He could be right about Baas though... I have a hard time believing the coaches would not let Heitmann start when he comes back even though Baas has the hot hand. Heitmann has been starting for us what 5-6 years? I don't think that Sing works like that. AB does it all... and props to oldman9er who does these as well and puts up news all the time on the football's future board.

The play-by-play is appreciated, now I can point out certain things.

Here is where I have a problem with Smith. He did not simply step up in the pocket on this play. Instead, he stepped forward (so far so good) and then he started sprinting to the right for no reason at all. As he starts to sprint, he can see that Ginn is wide open racing towards the sideline, but Smith is in no position to throw the ball because he started sprinting. So, now he has to slow down, reset his feet and throw. All of that running took about 1.5 - 2 seconds, and by the time he released the ball, it was too late, Ginn was already heading out of bounds.

If instead, he stepped up on the pocket, set his feet and scanned the field, he would have found Ginn open in time to release the football. All the sprinting around caused him to lose time, and time is at a premium in the NFL.

When people say Smith "stepped up" in the pocket, frankly, what they mean is he RAN up in the pocket. I can't understand why he can't simply take one or two STEPS up in the pocket, instead of running forwards or sprinting sideways.

If you watched Bradford against the Patriots, this is exactly what he does. He steps forward in the pocket, while scanning the field and getting rid of the ball just as the defense gets to him. He doesn't lose precious time and energy running forward or sideways.

Smith could be an All-Pro if he could just adjust this one quirky habbit.
