J.Raye and the 49ers have seen what Nate can do against 3rd and 4th stringers and now they want to see how he fares against 1st/2nd stringers.

Really? So we'll find out from a few preseason series if he's a superstar or bust?

Seriously, who's not going to support Nate?
You're just making crap up man

If he plays well that will be great. If he doesn't play well then that's ok too because he's a young man with a lot of potential who has much to learn.

Go Niners

What crap am I making up? There are non supporters of Nate who feel that his learning disability disqualifies him from starting regardless of performance. wat da.....We will find out a lot from these pre season sessions and evidently raye thinks so too. That's why hes throwing him in against great good competition. Rayes not praising Carr after his performance. Everyone who knows football knows the pre season matters in these cases. Jobs have been won And lost in these games take it easy. I just wanna see if he can roll with the big dogs, if not he'll be ready next year geez and I with other fans will chill on Alex. if he can do his thing there's pressure coming Alex's way from all angles that's it. And I am a funny guy.

Superstar or bust?? Its been FIVE years and people like you dont think our present qb is a bust yet... C'mmon dude, you just dont make any sense. I dont think good players need FIVE years to "develop".
and sorry to break your heart, but i think our current qb will be replace by the 4th regular season game, it might not be by Nate (yet) but he will choke once again.....
-sorry motel-

After reading your response it would seem you're seriously uneducated so please take the time and read my post again

Reading or comprehension problems? When he spoke of superstar or bust, he was referring to Davis.

Try to understand, you don't have to make a controversy out of everything. The team will start the best qb. There are too many people around here who have made too much of an emotional investment in one qb. Whether it was JTO, Hill, Smith, Davis or even Carr. Which is why qb threads over the last few years have got so corrosive.

It's the team first. Montana, Young, Garcia, Smith, whoever.

Emotional investment?? WTF?? are you engaged to Alex or what??

and finally, it bothers me when someone questions other posters about reading/comprehension issues

words. That's your problem, though.

I think people are making more of an issue out of Nate Davis' dyslexia than is really there. It doesn't mean that he can't learn, just that he learns a different way. Nate is more of a visual learner. (game film, pictures, practice reps...) Looking at X's and O's on a chalkboard can be confusing.

Did you know that there have been quite a few QB's in the NFL who have had dyslexia? One who comes to mind right now is HOF Steelers QB Terry Bradshaw. He was able to have a successful career dispite his dyslexia. So don't count Nate Davis out!

I posted this in the "Nate Davis Thread" back on August 12...

– Nate Davis is looking forward to playing in Indianapolis. The 49ers’ third-string quarterback was a star at Ball State, which is less than an hour away from the home of the Colts.

Davis said he has lots of family members and friends coming to the game but stressed that this was a business trip. He wants to show how much progress he’s made since his rookie season in terms of his understanding of the offense.

“I make decisions a lot quicker than I did last year,’’ Davis said. “Last year, I was kind of hesitant. Now I know what I’m doing. I still have a lot of work to do, though.”

Davis was 22-12 as a starter in college. He was the first player in Ball State to throw for 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.

Because of his much discussed learning disability, his biggest adjustment to the NFL has been learning how to decode opposing defenses and make fast reads.

“That’s the main thing: getting rid of the ball,’’ Davis said. “I can’t be holding on to the ball and making those lineman protect forever. If I make those decisions faster, the linemen need less time.”

And so again I ask, what has the TEAM done to specifically help this talented and potentially very valuable asset learn?

A special tutor? An extra coach? An alternative playbook? Anything?

Or just, “figure it out kid”.

I can’t believe they’ve done nothing extra to help develop this top-quality athlete.

What’s the answer Dan?

To answer your questions: The 49ers have indeed altered their teaching methods to help Davis along. Because he handles images well, the 49ers (especially Jimmy Raye) put an emphasis on teaching him plays with film work rather than the Xs and Os of a greaseboard or playbook. Davis also credited WR Dominique Zeigler and QBs Alex Smith and Shaun Hill (last year) with spending extra time with him to review the plays. David Carr might be helping him, too, but I haven’t asked.

You're just regurgitating what our coaches said about Davis when he was drafted.

The more pertinent issue is not the fact that he has dyslexia, it's that he's had two offseasons to learn the playbook and he still doesn't have the whole thing down. Remember all the quotes from Singletary saying how he was disappointed the Davis wasn't further along in understanding the offense? Didn't you read the practice reports where Davis was having trouble making the play call in time?

Don't get me wrong, I hope Davis succeeds but while backyard football may work in preseason when everybody is playing vanilla and with a small section of their playbook but if he doesn't know the playbook and know the protections to call in response to what the defense is showing he will get eaten alive.

Again I'm not saying Davis won't be a good quarterback, but I wouldn't get my hopes up about Davis quite yet. He has loads of talent but he has a loooong way to go.
Alex Smith has had 5 years to prove himself. What other team has given a player that many years to prove himself? Throw Nate in there and lets see what he can do!

That is what we will see a bit tomorrow night. However, to in any way suggest that Davis is a better choice than Smith at this point is to avoid reality.

I won't go into the Smith debate again...

nate davis has had two years to win the job and hanst--ergo he sux
Ughh according to Barrows, it looks like Nate Davis is gonna get stuck with the #3 spot duties again like last year following week #1 preparation for Seattle. And David Carr is still the #2 QB, and will be given limited snaps before Nate comes in somewhat after the first quarter I assume.

So Nate really has to prove himself and kick ass on the little chance (of evaluation time) they're giving him, but this could all change if he makes good use of his time (or if Carr just continues to stink it up).
