Balmers' rookie Contract really only $8 Million?

Balmer is still a bust, just not as much of a bust as the aforementioned.

But if everyone who is comparable in his draft class are not doing any better than him, doesn't that show the amount of time it takes for DL to produce at this level (3-4 years)

It does generally take a couple of years for a dlineman to produce. There just doesn't seem to be any promise with him to me. I don't think he's ever gonna be a decent player.

I think the biggest problem is that he hasn't shown anything. I dont think there is one thing we can say he is ok at, let alone good. For all the negative talk about Manny Lawson, he has actually produced in his 4 seasons here. They aren't the main thing he was drafted to do, but he does contribute. I think Melvin Oliver, a 6th round pick for us, has shown more than Balmer. This discussion makes me want to look at that 08 draft all over again.

Yeah but every organization probably has at least 1 first round pick over the past 5 years that isn't meeting the expectations of the fans/coaches/scouts. But I think only investing $8 million, or less, in him is a real positive.

I think you also should consider the talent around the players. Chris Long could be a beast, but he's stuck on a horrible D-line/defense. O-lines might be able to double team him constantly without having to worry about another player making them pay for it. Same could be said about Dorsey maybe.
I don't know cause I don't follow those teams/players though. Just something that should be considered.
With Balmer, all he had to do was become the starter at NT or LDE. He couldn't beat out Soap,a 4th round pick (104 overall) and Franklin, a fifth round (146th overall) for a starting job. You expect a first rd pick to be a starter.

At least Long and Dorsey were able to secure a starting job. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying those guys are great players. But they are easily a cut above Balmer.

That's the value of a late first rounder under the current rookie salary structure. You are getting good value and not breaking the bank if the player flounders.

Thats not bad at all considering Chris Long, also a d-lineman for the Rams,(signed) a six-year $56.5 million contract with the Rams with $29 million guaranteed.

If you look at sure money. $8 million for a first round pick??? As far as money is concerned I would say other guys picks before him: Chris Long, Glen Dorsey are more of a bust, based off of their lack of production, and amount of millions guaranteed they have.

I know 1st round picks come with expectations but with Chris Long not really being more than average I would say that its hard to label Balmer a bust in the, we are paying him too much department. Plus if he gets kicked off the team, the team probably wont have to pay the rest of the $8 million.

Long was a top 5 pick and at the bottom of the first round the money is obviously a lot different from top 5 or top 10.
