Our starting corners are solid imo.
The game in question I believe was an aberration.

screw espn.com, our CB's are the least of our worries, its the OL IMO and NT.
we have 3 solid CBs in Nate, Spencer and Brown.
Then i like this Phillip Adams kid and Karl Paymah is decent.
If LeRoy Vann imnpresses than we might have a nice young CB to develop.
DBs:
Nate Clements- CB
Shawntae Spencer- CB
Tarell Brown- CB
Karl Paymah- CB
Phillip Adams or William James- CB
LeRoy Vann- CB/KR
Michael Lewis- SS
Dashon Goldson- FS
Taylor Mays- SS
Reggie Smith/Curtis Taylor- FS
And yes, i can see us carrying 10 DBs.

With Vann struggling during ST session during practice I think we may put him on the PS.

Depth would be the only concern I have with the CB's.
I'm more concerned about getting better coverage from our Safeties (at least at SS).

It's a weakness in my opinion. Nate was having a barely average year before the injury, and Brown was very shaky all around last year. Spencer is very solid and should be this year. But the main problem is the lack of speed, and depth. Paymah, and James just aren't good corners. They may get you a few snaps but if they have to play any real time it's a major problem. I think out of all of the units the CB is the weakest though. I'm assuming the o line has been fixed but I'm probably being pre mature with that. They were ranked 21st in pass defense last year let's jut hope it improves. safeties are a liability in coverage as well for this team.

Nate needs to bounce back and play smarter. He took some bad angles last season and was hurt. Spencer I thought had a solid game.
If the defense line and outside LBs can create consistent pressure. Our defense will be one of the best in the league. If they can't our CB's will be exploited a bit.
Dashon Goldson started to really come on towards the end of the season. He is playing for contract so I expect an excellent year out of him. Mays needs to learn fast. His passion and motivation is encouraging tho. Solid play from our safeties will be a must to help cover our corner's BACKS (get it?).

I think we will be fine at CB as long as the front 7 is doing what its supposed to be doing. These guys shouldn't have to cover for days... pressure on the QB will make all the difference. Speed is not a primary concern as long as the corners can get a solid bump and the front can get pressure.
Personally I like CB's who can fly, but I don't think it's neccasary - Tampa Bay has been in the top 10 in pts and yds allowed in 11 of the last 13 years and have consistently done so with slow, but physical CB's. Barber and Talib are not fast at all, but they play well in that defense.
The Tampa 2 and the 3-4 are obviously different. IMHO LB's and Safeties are much more important in the 3-4 than a good cover corner. Look at Balt (Lewis, Suggs and Reed) Pitt (woodley, harrison, and Polomalu) and even the Packers - Woodson has lost more than a step yet he and Safety Nick Collins along with LB Clay Mathews made the probowl. I can't think of a CB for pitt or balt... Obviously there are teams with great speed corners that play the 34 (Jets and Broncos immediately come to mind, but I don't think that speed at that position is as important.

They play together back there, they will be fine. We shut down AZ's WR FCOL. They just need to learn to stay consistent. Nate and Shawntae will be fine!

Whether or not Clements is or is not performing well isn't the question. There are decent guys we can put out there. There is no way this compares to NT where after the starter, we have a 6th rounder and that's it.
Exactly, these are the same CB's that shut down Boldin and Fitz for 2 years in a row. Atlanta exposed our lack of speed at the position but I also think it was just a bad defensive scheme that resulted in a blowout. We held Houston and the Colts in check comparatively, (Houston's TE dominated us but thats not really the corner's fault) so we are in good shape but could definitely get better. If Mays can come along with Smith our Safety speed should increase which will help against receivers who stretch the field and take the pressure off our CB's a little.

I am not very concerned at this point. I think a couple of the young guys will show some ability. If Vann catches a thousand punts between now and camp, he might make it. He seems to have decent CB skills. I think the past few years, CB play has been a bit down because of shoddy safety skills. This should change. I was totally impressed with the changes in Taylor Mays and Curtis Taylor both of whom are tall gangly guys. Some coaches have made them more compact and agile. I saw Mays running before and after the OTAs and Mays was a different guy. If he can be that compact and coordinated in games, he should be awesome with his size and speed.
Curtis Taylor and Reggie Smith should provide much more help to the corners also.
The niners may draft a corner high next year but I think they should be fine this year.
I don't see any major gaps in the team like last year. The kick returners and lack of adequate blocking tightends and runningbacks was pretty obvious. From all accounts Singletary was dead set not to repeat those errors this year.
