And he stated that he is glad to be on this Defense cause we got "Trained Killas' and that's what I'm about"...

He also said that he LOOKS to blow people up.

Gotta say I like tha young man's swagger.

"he LOOKS to blow people up" is the reason why he fell to the 2nd round. dude cant cover, and doesnt make plays on the ball. hes so obsessed with laying the big hit, he blows his coverage.

im definitely NOT looking forward to a cocky young overrated S that cant cover and has no ballhawking sense. hopefully Sing works a miracle and turns him into something.

Okay, true. But that same guy was rated much much higher last season. A season which saw a mass exodus for the draft by most of their playmakers. I don't see Mays freelancing on the field so like MM says in talking about the Notre Dame game... "Instead of 22 guys you see 21 cause he's playing so far out there" so I put that on Carrol and not having the horses around him that he did the year before. C'mon man you put him on THIS team that are "Trained Killas'" Defensively and you can't find ANYTHING to be positive about?

And you KNOW that being an SC guy Ronnie will mentor him. So is that your final answer?

Good thing he can only get better huh? And by the way some of those monster hits WERE IN COVERAGE and blew them up so bad they dropped the ball or should i say the ball shot out! What he lacks in coverage he more than makes up for in recovery speed to get to the player and make a play even if it is a reception or even if he does not get an int. Last time i checked BERRY is a great college safety but ONLY GOT 2 INT'S last year......so i guess he was not a ball hawk either and i guess he was not a playmaker either????

See you have to evaluate the players using the same system, and berry's number's are only a little better as a playmaker but Mays was the leading tackler on USC not the lb's so OBVIOUSLY mays makes some plays in the run and pass game, and he is going to play SS on the 49ers so i think we are in good shape.....Goldson and Mays maybe rotating with M Lewis for a bit. Hell, Mays can't do worse than Lewis in coverage.
If Mays is SS, his slight lack of coverage will not be an issue. From what Ive seen, his coverage is not bad, especially when he times his hits to land a split second after the ball comes into contact with the receiver. As a SS, all Mays has to do is what he does best, KNOCK PEOPLE THE FU@K OUT!!!!

He's athletic and coachable... and was a steal! No better safety was on the board at that pick anyways. Caroll had the luxury of basically fielding an NFL caliber defense at USC, he saw that Mays was fast and loved to hit. So he let his LB's and DL attack the quarterback and force the quick throw, then put Mays in centerfield to clean up.

Mays didn't have to focus on coverage cause he was never asked to, give him a week of coaching at the SB and he makes an int. Coincidence... maybe, but he's gonna be a SS. Hopefully the only time he's asked to cover with no help is when its 3rd and 20, then he gets to play centerfield again.. with his size its not like thats all that bad.

Exactly. You can't show something that you are not asked to do, on film. This is something that he said too. But he also said that as the SS he was the leader of the SC Defense and if he has to he'll own it. You can't help but have a positive feeling about a guy who's only major flaw is "He looks to blow guys up".

To quote that guy on YouTube... "Taylor F*NG Mays" Yah mon.
