1) Staley is hurt.
2) Davis comes out of the gate like the second coming of Anthony Munoz.

Neither of those is likely, so I'd say we hope he learns fast and plays well enough to start at RT in week 1.

Most Rookie OTs drafted as high as Davis start at LT as rookies, period -- even on good teams. No sense in confusing them by making them play RT for a couple of years.

LOL!!!! This is the most hilarious thing I've read yet! What is this based on?

Did you see my initial post??? 12 rookies taken in the top 15 since 2004 (excluding this year, 2010). Of those, only 4 played on the right side. And as someone pointed out earlier, Levi Brown played RT for a lefty, so he doesn't count. So its really like 75%.

You are missing the fact the all along the Niners said they wanted to draft a RT, even though Davis was drafted high the plan is to play him at RT. Like others have stated if he plays outstanding then you cna consider moving him to LT in 2 years.

See the ravens as a perfect example they drafted Oher but they already had a LT, so what did they do, they started Oher at RT and now after 1 year he will be moving to LT and now Gaiter will move to RT or they are trying to trade him.

That wont happen to Staley but plain and simple Anthony Davis will be the RT this year

RT as a rookie; eventual starter at LT (IMO) down the road.

Probably, but why not just put him in @ LT from the get-go so he's better down the line. Historically, OTs drafted this high go straight to LT.

I agree and if I was the coach, I'd put Davis at LT and move Staley to RT (which will likely happen eventually). Unfortunately, just as Alex Smith is penciled in as the starter at QB, Staley is the starter at LT and will need to falter before a change is made.

Wouldn't be shocked if Davis lands at LT as a rookie. Most highly-drafted OTs do as rookies, why should we be the exception?
Simms to start the season at LT and Davis to finish. That doesn't sound too bad..

Oher was drafted at #23, not #11 -- RTs are taken at the end of the 1st round.

Burning a #11 pick on a RT is stupid, plain and simple.

hmmm, interesting...Sims played very well at LT in place of Staley last year -- it was the right side that was getting killed. So put Staley at RT and let him lock it down. Sims and Davis compete for LT. Sounds good.

No its not, it was a glaring need and this kid has the chance to be very very good.

Sebastian janakowski was drafted in the 1st round. Kickers arent usually taken that high.

Anyway, ur jsut mad that your boy Bulaga wasnt drafted by us

It's hilarious that other fans of other teams are drooling over our draft because we addressed our needs but even some of our own fans will just complain..then when the season comes and Smith and Gore are getting tackled behind the LOS they wanna fire Sing and our GM for not addressing our needs and wonder why our offense can't even get a yard on 3rd and 1

Davis > Bulaga > Iupati ..... but I don't want to start this debate again.

Your Janikowski comment proves my point. Taking a kicker in Rd 1 is incredibly stupid... at #17 too!

I'm not complaining about Davis...just saying that we should put him at LT right away.

he wont be the LT because you NEVER start a rookie at LT. we paid big money to Joe Staley to protect Smith's weak side.

Since 2004, 2/3rds of rookie OTs drafted in the Top 15 started at LT. Your statement is simply false.

Let's actually look at those selections:

2004
Robert Gallery (OAK) - Pick #2 - 15 Games Started at Right Tackle

2005
Jammal Brown (NO) - Pick #13 - 13 Games Started at Left Tackle

2006
D'Brickashaw Ferguson (NYJ) - Pick #4 - 16 Games Started at Left Tackle

2007
Joe Thomas (CLE) - Pick #3 - 16 Games Started at Left Tackle
Levi Brown (ARI) - Pick #5 - 11 Games Started at Right Tackle

2008
Jake Long (MIA) - Pick #1 - 16 Games Started at Left Tackle
Ryan Clady (DEN) - Pick #12 - 16 Games Started at Left Tackle
Branden Albert (KAN) - Pick #15 - 15 Games Started at Left Tackle

2009
Jason Smith (STL) - Pick #2 - 5 Games Started at Right Tackle
Andre Smith (CIN) - Pick #6 - 1 Game Started at Right Tackle
Eugene Monroe (JAX) - Pick #8 - 13 Games Started at Left Tackle

For the record, that's 11 total offensive tackles taken in the top 15 picks of the NFL Draft since 2004. Of those 11 tackles, 4 started predominantly at Right Tackle (which amounts to 62.5%).

Some rookies excel immediately (D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Joe Thomas, Jake Long and Ryan Clady), while others don't. Of the tackles that have had success, only Clady was picked outside of the top ten.

Right side is the strong side. Davis will probably be a stronger run-blocker than Staley. Davis will be the RT.

Most LTs taken that high in the draft don't already have a good LT on the roster.

You forgot Chris Williams in 2008..started 1/2 of the season, played LT. Jammal Brown is a very good LT as well.

My point is that MOST OTs drafted that high play LT...2/3rds when you include Williams. And Levi Brown played RT for a lefty -- so its really 75%. So, of the three remaining that played RT, Gallery is a bust at OT (good OG though), Andre Smith will probably be a bust, and Jason Smith is switching to LT for this season.
