OMG. Bruce whining about the "Alex Smith Experiment." Pathetic.

I listened to it, and I like Alex Smith, but he does make a lot of good points about McNabb/Smith with the Niners.

It really hit home when he said, "When did this team fall from greatness? You're not supposed to have 10 win seasons for 20 years, but this team did. You're not supposed to have back-to-back Hall of Fame QBs, but this team did. You're not supposed to win 5 Super Bowls, but this team did. This is one of the NFL's crown jewels, etc, etc, etc."

He brings up a point that the jury is out in Alex Smith, and he could be good, but bringing McNabb here would be like the Cardinals bringing Warner, or the Vikings bringing Favre. McNabb has played in one of the toughest divisions in football and put up numbers and wins. Alex Smith gets to play the Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals defenses, but still has not proven himself. McNabb would feast on the division.

That was basically his point, and as an Alex Smith supporter, I gotta say I agree with Damon Bruce. At this point, I would take McNabb over Smith. I'm sick of the baby steps. I would like to see a breakdown of McNabb's stats against the NFC West in the last 5 years.

People forget that Warner didn't come to Arizona and start lighting it up immediately. There's going to be a system change and a drop in play. Look at how Favre faired in NY, for example.

If I'm the Niners, I'm placing my bet on Alex Smith and the Eagles retaining McNabb. If Alex Smith fails, then I go after McNabb as a free agent. Yeah, there's a chance that McNabb doesn't make it to free agency but, to me, that seems like the safest bet.

Farve got the Jets a winning season and his shoulder was screwed the last 6 weeks of the season. 1st half of the season he was on fire. Folks act like it was a failure. Niners haven't had a winning record in 7/8 years. hing about Mcnabb is once he's a free agent it turns into a bidding war driving up the price.

First of all, It wasn't a failure but it was a huge decline. Look at his last season with the Packers and look at last season with the Vikings. Then look at the season in between with the Jets. You can't tell me that those three are equal.

Second of all, if a winning season is your measure, the reason we didn't have a winning season last year had nothing to do with Alex Smith. It had everything to do with a miracle pass from Favre, a lucky HB-pass from Addai, and really poor PR/KR.

Thirdly, the price in dollar amounts may go up but keep in mind that if you trade for him, you have to give up a 1st/2nd round pick + a large contract extension. So the difference in price is less IMO. And I'd say that the league opinion is pretty much the same as mine. How many RFA's have been signed? Not many.

Yea it wasn't as productive but he was injured. You just can't leave that part out of the story. I'm not debating was he on top of his game and had a great system but he was far from bad and far from not being effective. and when great qb's slip a little bit they still have winning records. that's why I brought up that point I wasn't trying to place blame on Smith for last season. Farve took a 5-11 team and made them 9-7 and on the brink of the playoffs. And I really don't think they have to give up 1st for McNabb. If so then it's out of the question. But the 49th pick? I wouldn't have that much of a problem with that. And McNabb isn't a RFA so I don't see what that has to do with anything.

Way to take my quote out of context. By the way, you can add play calling to my list of reasons why we didn't have a winning season last year.

People act like we are one of the worst teams in the league. If we had won one more game last year we would have had a winning season. I count at least three games off the top of my head that SHOULD have been wins: Vikings, Colts, Seahawks. And none of those losses are on Smith.

good post thanks
I read somewhere in this thread that Alex Smith has had a better supporting cast than Jason Cambell.

LMFAO.

Okay -

Lets compare the 2008 squad where Smith didn't win the QB job in camp:

49ers 2008 squad
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nfl&id=3743116

vs

Redskin 2008 Squad
http://www.thehogs.net/content/printRoster.php

Skins are better on defense, but that offense was still all Portis -

We can go back further - to the 2006 squads

49ers
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/sfo/2006_roster.htm

vs

Redskins
http://www.thehogs.net/content/printRoster.php

Seems pretty even on offense if not slightly better for the 49ers. We can talk position by position comparison on offense and discuss impact, production, and what team had better QB play.

I'm not a Smith hater, I'm not - but - the argument the guy on the radio is valid. That's all I'm saying.

Okay. Let me first state that I'm not going to get into a prolonged debate or a position-by-position breakdown. I have neither the time nor the inclination. I'm really quite lazy, and I'm not much of a typist.

I did not even listen to the radio excerpt. (See: lazy) I'll assume until corrected that the caller was attempting to knock Alex Smith. For the sake of brevity we can look at offense.

I will most definitely grant you that the Niners '09 roster smokes the Redskins '09 roster. Smith had the best cast in '09 that he has ever had. I'll stand by the opinion that he was not the reason they lost 8 games in '09, with the exception of maybe the Titans game.

BTW the link you provided for the '06 Redskins is actually their current roster.

In order for a fair debate to take place, one would have to break down game stats for every game that Cambell and Smith played in, taking into consideration field position, special teams play, playcalling, offensive scheme and so forth.

Then one would have to break down stats for every offensive player that was on the field at the same time as Smith and Cambell, penalties committed, drops turnovers, ect.

I will freely admit that I don't know much about the Redskins especially individual offensive performances over the last 5 years. I do know however that I have a deep distain for the way that franchise has been run with respect to their philosophy concerning the draft and FA. Giving up draft picks for one-year wonders is not the way to run an organization.

There are simply too many variables to consider when comparing the two supporting casts, especially over a 4-5 year period.

I'll leave it at this: It's sickening to me the lengths people will go to to blame all the woes of the 49ers on Alex Smith.

Has he been worthy of a #1 overall pick? Absolutely 100% NO.

For the first time in his career, IMO, the odds going into 2010 are stacked in his favor. With a very good defense, better playcalling, special teams play, better o-line protection.........there is absolutely no excuse why Smith should not light it up this year.

Then and only then, can a true, objective, unbiased hazing begin. So I'm going to be patient for just one more season. I'll be right or wrong, it's not the end of the world.

The main thing Bruce ignored is the lack of development the front office and coaching staff did for the other positions on the offensive side the ball:

OL: Baas, Snyder, and Rachal played like backups last year, and in their current forms (before training camp), that's where they would be on other teams. Those are 3/5 positions along the OL that are question marks. You can't have an effective pass protection with that kind of line.

WR: Besides Morgan showing a flash here or there, we haven't had a good #1 quality prospect for the QB to utilize until we got Crabtree - which is Year 6 of the Alex Smith experiment. If you want a good passing attack, you need weapons in the passing game. Look at Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Payton Manning, Kurt Warner, Phillip Rivers, etc...they all have multiple weapons at WR that add variety to the game - speed, possession, large, small, etc.

I agree - and I'm not trying to make this a long extended debate. I'm just asking people to not automatically dismiss what players we did have relative to other teams in the league. I know we like to say here that we had the worst roster in the NFL. That may be true, but it may not be true by much.

I'm honestly on the fence. I didn't know about or think about the Jason Campbell example relative to Smith (without the injuries of course) until someone mentioned it on the radio (I listen sometimes at work via the internet). I really really really really really want Alex to do well because he's a Niner and I'm a Niner fan (still get chills when I hear old games where Starkey says "touchdown 49ers").

I too am in the "one last chance camp" and really hoping it all comes together this season.

I'd like to add for the sake of discussion the criticism some of our position coaches have faced by members of the WZ. They too have been affected by the revolving door of OC's and instability. Namely our WR coach, Jerry Sullivan. With each new system, it brought new terminology. I admit I have also had issues with some of our position coaches, but I'm willing to give them a pass. Let's wait and see how the players do this season, in a offense they know well. I'm excited to see the overall improvements.

Almost gave away?!!!

Did we walk away with the W? If so then move on.

We probably would have lost the iggles game cause they didn't back off the Line. They came at us the way they come at their Division rivals. imho, this is the WORST example to use. They are a solid team and one you expect their HC to have them 110% prepared for their opponent. I thought that the loss of Johnson would affect their Defensive unit negatively, but instead they played like he was calling the plays in.

So that leaves the Titans. Which to me, Alex really didn't play that badly against. We just got killed in ST for the most part this season and it all started when Rossum was cut.

An please spare me the rhetoric about how Rossum was injured his first game as a Cowboy. I'm so bloody tired of seeing that nonsense floated around in McCloughan's defense. There were plenty of other guys that could have been cut and not be detrimental to the success of the team. How many fumbles and fair catches did the Punt Return unit have?

We lost as a team not as a QB.

I agree. Until Duke had his breakout season last year(and hopefully for many more) Alex hasn't had a real threat on the field. I think Tree had the impact that he did because he's a solid playmaker, but mainly due to Davis and Frank being on the field. Took some pressure off the kid so he could go on the field and do what he does best.

If Alex fails this season then it wasn't meant to be. But I see nothing but good things for the guy as long as the team does more than sign a solid OLcoach and experienced Assistant. If that's all we have done for the Line in this off season it may be an upgrade but not enough imho. Not after years of neglect it isn't.

The biggest sticking point for me was the MM comment on the self impossed budget do to the York's limited funds. I've been critizied on this site for calling BS on the "we have to sign our guys" montra . The issue isn't a cap issue, imo, the issue is we have broke ass owners that can't afford a real NFL team or build a stadium.
Smith will start.

If Joe Montana and Steve Young return from the fountain of youth and are 29 years old, they will sit and Smith will start.

If Smith looks positively awful in pre-season, he will start.

If Smith looks positively mediocre in pre-season, he will start.

If Carr or Davis look like all-pros in pre-season, Smith will start.

Is Smith looks barely ok after five league games, he will start.

If Smith is sort of ok, but nothing special, after seven league games, he will start.

If Smith takes 17 seconds to wind up and release the ball, Smith will start.

If Smith rolls out to his right and throws the ball away, Smith will start.

If Smith throws it high to Crabtree and he gets disabled for life, Smith will start.

If Smith stares down receivers twelve times in a row, Smith will start.

If Smith gets sick and Carr or Davis come in and look like they should be in the Hall of Fame, Smith will start when he returns.

If Smith is found in a hot tub with a 16-year old, he will start.

If Smith shows up with Nazi tats, he will start.

If Smith is a suspected axe murderer, he will start.

If Smith has all of the problems noted above after eight league games, and the Yorks are all in a twitter because revenues are declining and there are reports that Sing/Raye will be replaced, then Davis will be sent in with a whole set of plays that are opposite of his skills so that he will fail and the organization can say that Smith really was the best QB.

Actually, I fully believe Smith will be...sort of ok most of the time.
